Question about sprouting seeds

Hi, all.

Are the seeds that I purchase for my (seed addict) love bird OK to sprout, or should I purchase separate seeds specifically for sprouting? If the latter option is recommended, are there any brands that you prefer?

Also, if any of you are having trouble feeding fruits and veggies to your lovebird, I've had a lot more success doing so in the morning, when mine is hungry.

Mine hate fruit, but they love veggies, young grass seeds and flowers. Especially beans and flowers are favorite!

And I have no idea if all the sprouted seeds are save. I would say yes.

The seeds you get will be fine to sprout if you want, you'll need a fine strainer and a couple days of waiting but it should work! But there are better quality mixes out there.

I use Voolkman's cockatiel seed mix for my sprouting seeds. 3 days and they're ready to serve!

Actually- it's the easiest quality-controll there is:

try to sprout the seed you feed.
If they won't sprout at all (not counting mistakes like drowning them, low temperatures etc.) they are probably too old and rather crappy as food (oils get rancid in time, vitamins deteriorate).


and yes- if it is safe to eat as seed, they are safe to eat as sprouts.

I spoke with Leslie Moran on Saturday and we talked about how I told her her "female" budgie was actually a male! This was years ago, I was probably about 15 years old... and who was I to say otherwise when all the vets and breeders said female? I guess I made quite the impression because she still remembers me! LOL Oh, and I was right! (about the budgie) I look forward to learning more from her! (diet wise!)


I actually feed China Prairie Sprouts and have converted some of my club members over to feeding it simply because it's better than what we can get locally! (by quality and variety at least). I missed last months club meeting, this month was a garage sale... so of course I didn't think to bring any sprouts with me... and I had members asking if I had brought some! Whoops! LOL



I don't recommend feeding their regular seed as sprouts simply because most bird food is coated in oils, vitamins, have dyes, or something else and this can actually increase the likelihood of the sprouts going bad.
