Hi Guys

many thanks for letting me join this forum.

I have always been a dog lover, never had a bird until this
beautiful very young lovebird landed on our window sill
on 5th July.

I would guess she was no more than 3-4 months old,
and we live on 14th floor in our building.

took ages to get her tame , now she has started to lay eggs

on 4th and 5th of this month, she laid 2 eggs , I had left on 3rd to
go to see my family , so my partner was there.

it was like ww 3 with them, until I got home 6 days later.

she did not take any notice of the first 2 eggs, so he took them away after a few days , then 6 days ago
she laid another , then 2 more in 4 days now has 3 in total, and sitting on them all the time.
and still looking for paper etc, to bring into her cage

how do I stop her from looking to nest all the time . her eggs will not have
any chicks in them ,

how long do I let her lay on the eggs , so many mixed reports out there

also what is best diet , at moment she has food I got in pet shop,
that has lots of seeds etc

so have loads to learn , I love her to bits now .

any help and advice would be greatful , sorry for long post

Mike

Welcome. I do not believe she is as young as you think she is or she would not be laying as many eggs or any eggs. Make sure you are not petting her on the back, stomach or anywhere besides her head because that encourages breeding behavior. Try to get her off the seeded diet because it's high in fat and a high fat diet can encourage breeding behavior also. Try switching her over to pellets and fresh veggies with a little fruits.
Maybe someone else can give advise about what to do with the eggs she keep laying.

Hi and welcome!
As a child I had a cockatiel essential die of over-laying, so I’ve done a lot of research into this topic. It’s also one of the most asked questions about birds (especially lovebirds) so instead of typing everything out each time I wrote an article. It covers a little more than just your specific question but it’s good info.

You do not mention if you ever tried to find this lovebird's owner...did you ever try to find its old owner, as someone probably lost this bird?

Over-laying can be a huge problem in female parrots. Make sure to read the advice carefully above.
