Hey Guys!! So I have a about 4 year old Lovebird named Gus and recently he has been acting a bit odd. He has been making a small noise that sounds like a mix of wheezing and crying he hasn't stop making it for a couple of days now. He's puffy and hasn't been as active as he is used to be. He's staying more so around his cage then around my room like he normally does. He has been eating however, and sometimes does go back to his old ways with chirping and flying. I am really worried and confused as to what is wrong with him. I don't have an avaian vet near me at all and if you guys have any insight as to what might be wrong or any past experiences you'd think would help that would be greatly appreciated. This is my first bird and he's very special to me and I just want him to be okay. Thanks you guys for your help.

If you don’t have any avian vets, what about an exotics vet or even a regular vet who has an interest in birds? While less than ideal, it is still better than trying to treat a sick parrot at home.

By your description, it sounds like your bird may have a upper respiratory infection, which most likely requires some sort of antibiotics only a vet can prescribe. That is, unless any new scented things that may have been received as gifts over the holidays like candles or perfumes or air fresheners are now permeating the house with chemical scents that are toxic to parrots? Anything like that should be removed ASAP and the area aired out.

Parrots like to hide illness so they can appear ok with just minor symptoms when in fact they are very sick and going downhill fast. You need to get him to the best vet you can find and in the meantime, keep him extra warm, lights low to promote rest and offer whatever foods he will eat to keep his energy up.

Hello Annelovies, welcome to the PFs. Sorry it is under these circumstances.

April gave you some great advice. I would try to get him in to see a Vet ASAP.

Where are you located, maybe someone can suggest a good Avian Vet nearby?

Best of luck to you both.

Update: I went to a normal vet who sometimes sees birds, about 3 hours away from me and they prescribed an anti-biotic. We have been using it and Gus is improving greatly! Thank you guys for all your help!!
