Hello all!! I don't log in much (I should log in more!!) but about a year ago I posted this post: http://www.parrotforums.com/lovebirds/79985-new-lovebird.html
It's a long post, but a quick summary is: after one of my most affectionate and friendly cockatiels passed suddenly, I lost a lot of confidence in a recent decision to adopt a rescue lovebird, and I wasn't sure I could/should keep her.
I got a good scolding thankfully!! Elby bird deserved better than being bounced around like that.
The long and short of it is, after a long year of what felt like no progress, over the last 2 months or so Elby has gone from running at the sight of me to eating seeds & millet out of my hands
I'm happier than I can even describe. It was a rough road. Her foster clips wings - which is a decision every parront is entitled to make, but I do not, and in the case of Elby it was honestly scary trying to handle her at first. She'd launch herself kamikaze style any which way to get away from my hands and I ended up having to take her to the vet to have 3 blood feathers plucked before finally deciding I wouldn't attempt to handle her directly until she had her wings back.
Seeing how she came around so quickly with just a little bit of effort on my part trying to extend an olive branch, the way I interact with my entire flock has changed. I have two doves who simply don't care about people... I used to just open their cage and scoop them up gently when it was time to go home, but now I put the extra effort into asking them to step up. One of my cockatiels has also learned to step up.
I'm not at the finish line yet but I know Elby is going to come around & thanks for the good talking to you all gave me a year ago lol!!
