A lovebird called snowblau hand-tamed by myself
Hello,

My lovebirds Mango and Hima laid 5 eggs and all 5 of them hatched. As the chicks are growing up I see the nest box is soiled and dirty. I did not want to touch the chicks to get them out of the box and do quick cleaning since I though the hen might abandon them. So I placed some shredded papers in the cage which the hen took and placed in the box. The dry papers on top placed by the hen will work to prevent the keep the chicks dry. I was wondering whether placing shredded dry papers may cause the parents to get into the breeding mood again since I want to give them a break before the next clutch. I also heard if the parent get into breeding mood they may start hurting the chicks, is that true?

The eldest chick is almost 3 and 1/2 weeks old and the smallest is 3 weeks

Please suggest whether it's alright to do what I did. Thanks in advance.

You did the right thing. If you want to prevent them getting an other clutch you can do a few things to prevent it.

What I do is rather crude, but it works. When the chicks are being fed by the father (usually after three weeks) I carefully watch the parents. The moment I see that they want to mate again, I remove the hen and put her in a different cage. The father will take care of the chicks.

I bet there are better ways, so I guess someone will give you a better idea.

Anyway. After the chicks are weaned, the parents will start to attack them and you will have to separate them.
