New Blue and Gold

Hi, I only just joined forum, i am getting a baby b&g in a couple of weeks and have some questions. Firstly she will have a large cage in my living room( i spend all my time in this room) in which she will stay while i am at work and im hoping to have her out the rest of the day(cage has perch on top) at night the cage will be covered,once covered is she likely to make any more noise if its dark? and as i get up at half five for work am worried she may start being noisy if i uncover her! i do have close neighbours. i understand she may be noisy during the day, but all my neighbours are out at work so not a problem. How much noise in general do they make? I just want to put my mind at ease over these issues. I am really looking forward to building a bond with her! :blue1:

I have a B&G and yes they can be noisy at certain times of the day. Mainly dusk and dawn. Im a postman so im up fairly early too but I leave Rio covered till my wife gets up a few hours later. He will make noise when covered if he hears my son playing or if we are capering but other than that, he is generally quiet when covered!

I aso have an outdoor cage for Rio and if I go out of sight for more than a minute, he will scream the place down!

You have to teach them to be self sufficient otherwise they'll have you trained! If they don't get their way, they'll scream! They're like little kids that never grows up. LoL...depending on what kind of locking mechanism you have on the cage, they can learn to open doors. Mine have a double locking mechanism and he still learned to open, I had to put a pad lock on his door when I am not home. I don't cover mine cause he hates it, he chews them up. Good luck!

Thanks for that, unfortunately i live alone so will have to uncover her just before i go out and hope for the best and rely on the neighbours to let me know what she gets up to!!

Another thing you can do is by leaving your tv on for the baby to watch. Even leaving the radio on would be nice. Just leave on the proper channel cause they will learn something you don't want them to...Mine learned to say "shake that a**" when someone left the MTV on...I leave on disney or something like it when I'm gone....

You have "close neighbors" and your getting a Macaw? I see this not ending well hahahahaha. A couple owns a Blue & Gold macaw in the next town from me. They put him outside in their yard almost every day. I know when he's outside because I can hear him squawking LOUDLY while I'm driving my truck a block before get to their house.

So I wish you luck with this. I would highly recommend you check out You Tube for Screaming Macaws and turn your speakers all the way up on your computer to give you an idea of what is about to happen.

I have many close neighbours too and only ever had 1 complaint in the last year and she was just having a laugh really.

thanks that has made me feel a lot better, they are understanding when my two dogs yodell their heads off when i leave before 7am!! There is so much conflicting information from everyone, i know that until i get her i wont know what to expect really!!

Ive heard its good to leave tv or radio on for them, i have some soft music cd's to play on a loop while i am out!!

When I took in my scalet a big reason for them needing to rehome him was the screaming. The biting was lesser of the two issues

They said it was unbarable and they couldn't tolerate it. When I brought him home, I was nervous but he doesn't scream like I had expected. True he has his moments but like others have said its a morning and evening call. I think you should be fine as long as you dont do anything to incourage it.

We have a two macaws, and have had them for 2 months now-I was worried about the neighbours as we are all very close housed. At the moment its me asking them about the noise that they get fed up with-they say they cant hear Jasper and pepper, but like Rossco says they are certain times they are noisey. Plenty of toys to keep your baby happy, and the TV is great-Jasper has a few words picked up from Spongebob! pick channels with no swearing hahaha

You can ask on here and get some what of an idea. But to me, like I pointed out, the best way and to get the best idea is to check out You Tube for screaming Macaws or Noisy Macaws. That is unless you live near a bird rescue center and can visit them.

After being a cop for 20+ years and answering 100's if not thousands of noise complaints, people were more annoyed by barking dogs than squawking birds. I think they realize that birds make noise and that is in their nature and are willing to tollerate a certain amount of it. But they have no tollerance for barking dogs at all.

I would make one other suggestion, go to your closest neighbors and let them know your looking at getting a Macaw or bird and it might make a little noise every now and then and see what they have to say. You would also be best to take your bird over or invite them to meet your bird because once they get to know him, they may have a bigger tollerance for his noise.

My closest neighbor loves my birds because when I first got them, I invited them over to a get together so they could meet my new bird. So eventhough there is only about 25 feet seperating our houses and Mac the Eclectus having a scream that could shatter crystal, they adore him. But he's really only vocal a few times a day unless my Senegal gets him going with her vocalizations. Also, the added bonus is that I get to socalize my birds with other people.

Cheers, at least some people are making me feel like im not going to become a social outcast in my neighbourhood,I think i am just thinking about it too much, I shall be explaining to my neighbours before i bring her home! when i visited the breeder ( who has 4prs of breeding macaws in outside aviaries) other than them screaming as they were chased from their inside housing, for me to see, they were very quiet the rest of the time i was there!!

Thanks to all for your words of advice,I hope to be getting jester in a couple of weeks (the waiting is getting excrutiating now!!!) i shall take some pics and post when i have her and no doubt be asking for more advice, by the way one more question before i go toaday what types of wood are best for chewing, i have some small apple branches( but they wont last forever), iv read conflicting things online so would appreciate some real bird owner answers!!

Haha! I have no tolerance for barking dogs!!!! I don't allow my dogs to constantly bark!

When I was researching Red Fronted Macaws I found a video of two of them setting each other off with their calls and it was rather amazing how in sync they got to each other. I turned up the speakers and let it play. The noise got my birds downstairs going and it was kinda funny. Since I live in a end unit townhome I am a bit concerned the baby's calls will be too much.

My eclectus use to say "Out...I want out....I want out NOW!" I tell him "not right now Joaquin. Later". He would in turn start yelling "HELP....HELP ME! I WANT OUT!" Since I had my windows open new neighbor called the police and I had to answer for Joaquin's naughtyness. *sigh* When the cop entered my home and saw Joaquin that little naughty Eclectus told him "your weird" The cop just chuckled with understanding.

On Friday I had the windows open and was upstairs using the computer my Noble Macaw Mihijo started his afternoon opera session so from upstairs I join him. Then Mihijo started yelling "WHAT?" and I in turn would yell "HELLO" with Mihijo yelling louder "WHAT?" It was actually pretty funny until someone screamed "SHUT UP". Both of us stopped but we both laughed. I still worry about what a baby Red Fronted Macaw will be yelling and I like to have my windows open when it is nice out....so...I guess we will have to see what will happen.

I have a b&g and like you have very close neighbours. I don't cover mine at night as he doesn't like it. As soon as I turn the lights off and go to bed he doesn't make any more noise until I get up again in the morning so you should be ok. If I am leaving the house early then I just open the curtains so that he wakes up as the sun comes up.

I leave a radio on for my parrot and am not really sure if he makes a noise during the day or not. Most of his screaming is in the evening and only when he feels he not getting enough attention or if something scares him.

Don't have the cage to close to a window as lots of things outside scare my parrot. For instance: he doesn't like it when buses/ lorries go past as he can see them or if there are cats or children outside.

The thing that makes my parrot scream the most is children laughing, crying or screaming. That sets him off instantly.

The screaming takes a bit of getting used to but just make sure you ignore your parrot otherwise he will do it just to get your attention. Mine is screaming a lot less now than when I got him as he knows it doesn't get him anywhere.
