Red Fronted Macaw congenital defect

I was going to pick up this really friendly and cute red fronted macaw but later they found out that it has a congenital defect. The rib cage didn't close all the way so the heart is exposed with nothing protecting it. The bird visually looks fine and you wouldn't notice it. They brought it to the vet and everything turned out ok and the breeder said they have never had a bird like this.

My question is does anyone know if any vet or is it possible to implant something to protect his heart? I was wondering maybe if I was to pick him up if I could find some sort of sponsorship to fund this or if it is possible?

Personally I do not know of any vet who is knowledgeable with such an undertaking. I am getting a RFM this spring (making payments for him) I noticed on the breeder webpage that this years babies are all gone so mine RFM is not even hatched yet.

What does the breeder say about this special RFM? I have never heard of this defect before and am interested what the options would be for such a bird. Please keep us updated with news of what will be done for this parrot.

Also noticed you have a Golden Conure. This is my dream bird and have always wanted one. I don't think anyone in my state breeds them and I don't think I can get one from Texas (like I am getting my RFM from) and bring it back to Minnesota. I would love to hear about your Monte.

No real options just a discounted rate thats all. As far as my golden conure he or she is great I haven't took a dna test yet. But the personality is so sweet. So far he hasn't bitten anyone in the house really friendly and cuddly. You can turn monte upside down hold monte like a baby and can say hello and step up. But doesn't talk as much as my alexandrine who talks like crazy and is clear but you can't pet him. I was talking to a breeder who breeds goldens and he told me that the RFM personality is just like a golden and if so I'm sold. I have always wanted a macaw but just scared of the size and the RFM fits the bill.

I have known a few birds that have plucked themselves raw and in order to prevent it, they cut a tube sock(with necessary holes for the wings) and placed in on the parrots body. I can see how this would work especially if you sewed in a pocket with a small hard plastic piece to protect his heart.

I have to admit the Golden conure is my wish list for my third most wanted parrot. My first dream bird was my Illiger's macaw. I waited 10 years to get him and I was blessed to have him for 9 years. Diego died this summer from a fatal stroke he suffered flying back to his cage.

My second dream bird is the RFM. I so love these parrots as their personalities fit with mine so well. I met my first RFM in 1997. Back then they were over 3 grand to get as a pet and I could not afford that. Now that the price has dropped to about half it is much easier to accomplish this dream of a RFM. It also helps that his breeder takes payments. It is my hope to travel to Texas to pick him up instead of having him shipped. Either way this spring I should have him paid off and hopefully the parents will be on eggs or hatching chicks by then.

My third dream bird is the Golden conure. I just LOVE their personalities. So much reminds me of my Noble and Illiger's but with a more sweet baby personality. I love that they like to cuddle wrestle and are such beautiful parrots. Since I live in Minnesota I do not think this dream could come true since they are so regulated. From what I learned I could get one as a pet but only from a breeder in Minnesota. I do not think anyone up here breeds them.

I don't know if I could get a RFM with the problems yours has. I would be too afraid I would loose him. I have experienced loss with both my Eclectus and my Illiger's and it was very very very hard on me. My Noble macaw is 16 years old and will be 17 in February. He has outlived two brothers.

Who is the breeder for the RFM? I am getting mine from Wendy Craig. I cannot wait for him to come home.
