Mourning loss of my Harlequin

I am new to this forum but have had parrots for 20 years. I am heartbroken as I came home from work and shopping and found my 15 year old Harlequin Macaw dead on the bottom of his cage. He was fine when I left this morning; yesterday he was fine-I have pictures on my cell of us posing with him on my arm and kissing me. Monday was normal, he spent time out with me on the couch, and Sunday he spent time while I thoroughly cleaned his cage and gave him shower time and play time. I noticed nothing out of the ordinary. I am going to call my avian vet this morning and bring him in for a necropsy. He was housed in my sunroom-livingroom with a Congo gray. I also have an umbrella too and M2 who have their own room. Everyone seems healthy, but it scares me that I didn't pick up any symptoms. I know birds mask illnesses, but he was so normal-laughing, talking, playing. I want to make sure it's nothing contagious.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. That's a good idea to make sure it wasn't from anything contagious.

How long had your macaw been housed with your african grey? Do you use any type of air filtration system in your home? Greys and cocktoos are very dusty birds and could be a problem for macaws. I have read that housing them together or in the same room really isn't a good idea. But I don't know this first hand. When was his last vet check?

I'm sorry for your loss.

I know you must be sick with grief. It is a very sad event when a bird we have had in your home and love dies.

Sorry for your loss. You stated two things in your post, 1st you stated that you house the U2 and Macaw in the same room, Due to the U2 dust, this can be very bad for the Macaws lungs. 2nd, you stated that you cleaned the Macaw's cage. Did you use a new product that could have been harmful to your Macaw. I only use hot water and lemon juice. I never use soaps, bleach or other cleaning products. Did you spray any air cleaners near their cage or scented candles. I read that Fabreze is also harmful to birds. I hope the best for your birds and performing the necropsy is not a bad idea. Joe

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my Blue Crown conure 2 months ago to a sudden stroke. It was completely unexpected as well.
