Smile Powder coated or stainless steel ?

Sponsored Links
Hi all,
I am eargerly awaiting my Hyacinth and it's come time to purchase the cage. If anybody has any knowledge of these particular types of cages I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Powder coated or stainless steel ?

Hyacinth have a tendency to destroy cages but im not sure how will stainless steel hold up against a Hyacinth.

Stainless steel. It has more of a chance of standing the pressure of a Hyacinth's beak. A powdercoated one would snap pretty easily with them.

But for how long? Stainless cages are very expensive to keep replacing!

Re: Powder coated or stainless steel ?

I haven't heard many stories about Hyacinth's breaking stainless steel. I would look for cages that came with warrentees myself. If you give the bird plenty of toys and wood (and make it new for him when you can) hopefully he'll leave the cage alone?

No idea though on how easily SS is to snap with that kinda beak. Hyacinth's are awesome, but man oh man can they chew.

My B&G already broke the welded part in a few area. But his cage is 6 years old.

Re: Powder coated or stainless steel ?

Thanks for the suggestions I have heard they are a cages worst nightmare. It would be easier to replace a powder coated then a stainless steel cage anyday , but I was also worried about the paint chips they Macaws can chew off and swallow. I was told this isnt harmful to them , but how much isnt harmful ?
What a dilema ! I was even considering not getting the HY and getting a Blue and Gold or a Greenwing.
My birds are out most of the day and I do supply them with oodles of toys and perches. I also would like to get a jungle gym for him.
Figuring one or two of those for him to climb on and p0lenty of TLC should keep my HY from trying to dismantle the cage , lolol.
I was also told to shop in a hardware store for his toys and they were serious ! lolol. I could just imagine going into a hardware store and being asked by a sales person if I needed any help and I would explain what i am looking for , lolol.

Re: Powder coated or stainless steel ?

Please be advised that if you purchase the brand King Cages, the powder coating is bird safe. SS is always the best way to go. Hy and Gw macaws have the most power in their bite out of the Macaws. My GW is in a King Cage, the largest i could find, to date knock on wood, he has not even tried to chew through it. I too have plenty of wood toys to keep him busy and he is out of the cage more then inside it.
Hy and GW are very smart and learn really quick. Make sure your HY understands the word (NO). Use it for training them and reward when the HY stops the action they are doing. HY loves nuts so use them when training. If they start to chew on the cage, say no in a stern voice, when they stop, say good bird and reward. do this over and over until they understand.
Please post pictures of your HY once they come home, love to see them. Best of Luck Joe

Re: Powder coated or stainless steel ?

Thanks Joe , I will surely use your training advice.
I will either buy the SS or the Kings. The price on those SS are outrageous but well worth if I was sure he wouldnt snap a bar like a carrot stick , lolol. If I have to go buy a new cage in a couple of years , I'd rather it be a Kings then a SS cage !

I definitely will post pictures when the big day comes. I still need to replace my computer so I can post my pictures , but you know , priorities first , lololol. I buy toys for a bird I dont even have yet. I have a pile of them in my closet already ! I just couldnt bring myself to buy one yet because it would drive me crazy to stare at a empty cage
