My Hahns macaw is 4 months old and just recently weaned. I just picked him up yesterday. I do have a couple questions to whether somethings are normal or if i should be concerned. When i brought him home i tried to show him where the food and water was but all he did was climb on the bars. He will not sit on any perches for more than a minute in his cage, and that's only when im there. When he went to sleep last night he just huddled up in a corner even though there was a perch right underneath him. He won't eat unless im hand feeding him and when i let go of the food item he just drops it. Also i think he knows where the food and water is but won't use them alone. I try to put him on the dishes but he just climbs up the cage. He doesn't play with any toys either unless he's out of his cage. I don't know how to help him. I'm concerned if i leave for to long he won't eat. Please help with any suggestions.

( Forgot to say he's not interested in any treats so it's hard for me to encourage him to "Step up")

Well he's in a new place. Everything is new to him. So let him settle down. He's still young. Gave a few days play with him let him out talk to him read or sing. In no time you will see a difference

Yep, just need to give him time with everything being so new and different. Patience is key!
Our Hahn's transitioned very well since the breeder was a couple of houses down at the time & the wife went down there almost daily to visit her before bringing her home.

My daughter's hahns always snuggled into something to sleep. We started with a towel threaded through the bars, and she'd wrap herself up in it. Later on she had a proper fluffy parrot bed. Be quiet and comforting, and give him time to settle in. They are super birds, you'll soon have a great companion.

my 9 year old hahns took 4 weeks to start playing with toys wen i bought him. as the others say let him settle down in the new surroundings. it can take 6-8 weeks for them to get use to you and new home...

im also getting a 13 week old hahns macaw in about 8 weeks time:)

Thanks a lot for the comments. This makes me a little more comfortable with the way he's acting :)

It's most likely just anxiety of the new environment - and you're probably the most constant person in his life right now, so he's attaching himself to you. Ensure to talk to him constantly to reassure him. If he doesn't eat on his own, but with you, consider bringing food out with him and get him to eat from the bowl outside of the cage. Especially keep an eye on his drinking - if he's not, consider soaking some pellets before feeding them to him to keep him hydrated. And fresh, juicy fruits will work too. Dehydration is a big concern to keep an eye on.

As maggenpie has suggested, you can get yourself a 'bed buddy' or 'hidey hut' - keep a very close eye on it to ensure he isn't chewing it as lose threads are dangerous (choking, entanglement). If you use one, get into the habit of checking it morning and night; and have a spare on hand, so that way if it needs to go in the wash, he won't be left without his fluffy :)

Congratulations on bringing him home! Do we get to see any pictures yet?
