baby is here..with pics and concern's

Hello, My baby arrived last night. She is healthy and alert but i wanted to get yoru opinions on her age before i tell you what i was told. In my opinion her said age doesn't match her development. I have hand reared my previous 2 greys but this will be my first macaw so i am aware there will be diference's. And is the meaty part of her beak supposed to look that swollen?

Sorry pics didnt come out as clear as i thought they would. Here's a closer one of her beak. I had a messup in my pics. The pics in previous post are the ones i was given by the breader.....the ones in this pic is the bird i recieved.

Well, it certainly does not look like you have recieved the same Bird! They are totally different!

I am not familiar with Macaws, but other Members will be able to help with your concerns.

Looks like a different bird to me, too. Can you post a pic that you take of her back so we can see the feathering.

I also think she does not look completely well. I would take her to a vet to be on the safe side.

Definitely not the same bird, and that beak doesn't look so healthy with the swollen bits, but unsure as I don't have macaws. I would be speaking to the breeder and getting the baby off to the vet just for peace of mind!

That cannot be the same bird in my opinion. Your bird is much younger. I have recently brought home my baby greenwing. He has just turned 4 months. I am trying to remember what he looked like at 3 months, but I think he was much, much more feathered at 3 months than yours is. To me it has been a long time since he had such a scarce amount of feathers. The beak does look a little swollen to me, he also looks like he has alot of formula on his face. I would use a warm washcloth and clean him up. I would also get him in to the vet. I am not an expert however I am comparing him to my bird. How many feedings did they tell you he was on a day?

obviously not the same bird. yours looks very young. where and how did you get your bird. in other words was it shipped to you? how old was it supposed to be? I agree about a vet visit Did the bird come with any health warrenty? do you have experience hand feeding?I do not ha ve any experience with large parrots but a lot of people here do.

I was worried someone would think she didnt look healthy but she is very tired it's been a long morning. She seemed happy and healthy all morning but when i took the pics she's ready for sleep. lol I will definatly be taking her to the vet though even if she i wasnt worried but i kind of am so she's going.

I do have experience hand feeding. I am making the apointment for the vet in a few min. She was on a plane for 2 hours, from nyc to upstate ny. She was suposed to be hatched on aug 8th but looks much younger to me. She is my first baby macaw though so i am looking for confurmation on weather you all think that she looks 8 weeks? I dont think she does.

when I reread your post I saw that you had hand fed your greys. I am confused though was the first set of pictures from the breeder supposed to be the particular bird you were getting or just a general picture of that type of baby? he is awfully cute you cannot resist those faces.

I am not sure about your breeder but a couple that i contacted (including who i purchased my BCC from) had a 72 hour window from time of 'delivery' to when i had to have the bird examined to be covered under "warranty" (that is a strange idea, but.....)
I am actually calling now to find out the result of my little guy's blood work. I paid to have everything checked as soon as i got him even though pricey, because if i waited until after th 72 hour window, i knew there was no chance of coverage. (not that i would ever 'return' him now. i love him).
After all my yapping here--your baby is just adorable!! He definitely looks to be a younger baby than the baby you got a photo of, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. After the vet examines him, you will have peace of mind.

It is the one they advertised for the bird with. So it is a possability that it was just a pic of for the species. But i am concerned about if she looks like she is 8 weeks. They say she hatched on Aug 8th but all the pics i see of 8 week old chics look more feathered. To me she looks more 6-7 weeks. Im sorry for all the confusion. Typing dont really convay proper conversation. lol. Vet appt made for tom morning.

If the 2nd set of pictures is the bird the breeder shipped to you. he shouldn't have. The bird is much too young. I got my Greenwing when he was 5 weeks old, hand delivered by the breeder. The bird in the picture looks abit younger than 5 weeks, maybe 3 1/2 to 4 weeks old. If you have experience hand feeding you should be OK. I would add sunbutter and coconut oil to the formula. As for the break the picture are not to good but it looks OK to me. You must buy a digital scale and weigh him daily to see if he is gaining or loosening weight. Don't worry he my loose a little weigh at 1st. Just make sure he starts to gain weight soon. If you take him to a vet make sure it's an avian vet only most regular vets don't enough about birds to do you much good. I don't know were you live but make sure you keep him warm in the car. I am i love with our vet he was an very good avian vet but no longer takes new cases for exotics but because we have used him for yrs he still see's our birds. Even new one. So teh hatch date of oct 8th is incorrect then right??lol. I am keeping the house at a temp of 75 till she gets feathered and because of her age she goes with me to the office and i keep that warm as well. The car gets started long before we get in. lol. New york is starting its decline in temp pretty early thins yr. lol. I will definatly keep you all posted. willist was your macaw's beak squishy at the joints at this age?

I don't recall the joints being squishy, but they may have been, its been over 7 years since he was that young. I also never handled his beak that much until he got older when I was teaching him how hard he could squeeze my fingers. I generally held his neck in order to feed him and would wipe his beak with a damp paper towel to clean him up after eating. He was a difficult bird to hand feed. He would let most of the formula run out all over the place or refuse to open his mouth even though his crop was empty. Luckily he weaned pretty young. I hand raied my CAG and a Cockatoo and Auggie was the biggest pain.

This guy is a very aggressive feeder. He bob's his/her head so much im scared im going to her. My grey were a lot easier as well. Im also worried that i will end up putting formula down the wrong whole with all her bobbing and weaving. I just go real slow with the suringe

Ok, so I'm pretty sure we all agree that this is NOT the same bird that the breeder send you pictures of.

VERY cute Greenwing, but IMVHO he can't be older than 4 weeks from the photos you've submitted. I just looked at pictures of my Niko when I first saw him, and he was more feathered than that. And he was 5 weeks then.

NO!!! Absolutely not. MUCH too young. He needs to be kept warm at all times, and the formula you feed needs to have the right temperature as well.

He needs to be weighed BEFORE and AFTER each feeding, so you can get an accurate idea of how much actually went inside (rather than on his feathers).

Macaws are VERY aggressive feeders, so you must be careful not to aspirate him. You said you had experience handfeeding greys. Well, a Macaw unfortunately is MUCH tougher since they are so vigorous with their head motions/bobbing/feeding response.
