I am female, I could be getting a B&G in a couple of months If I get a female (which is what the prospective chicks DNA results have come back as) is she more likely to bond with My husband or Sons because they are male or does gender not always matter?
My husband works away and is only home 1 week a month so maybe he won't spend enough time with her to bond? My sons are 10,10 and 4, not sure if their age will make a difference. I am the bird lover and will be the caretaker etc. I'm concerned because all the companion birds I have or have had have been male, not by choice it just turned out that way.

Have any of you bonded with a Macaw of the same sex?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a male blue and gold and he will go to both genders. When I first brought Merlin home I spent a lot of time with him, but as my kids became older, I became more involved in their activities and spent less time with him. My husband and son picked up the slack on my part and Merlin's loyalties transferred. I am working with Merlin more on a daily basis so he is becoming more comfortable being handled by me.

Since you have young children of all ages, please have your bird socialize with all family members and their friends while your bird is very young. This way your bird will accept everybody willingly when he/she is mature. I think your youngest may feel a bit intimidated with the bird's size as well as its beak because my youngest daughter was and still is. Your bird will choose his/her favorite over time and there's nothing you can do about it.

I wish sombody told me these things when I first brought my bird home.

Hi,
I am female and have a female B&G. She definately is more bonded to me than any of the males in the house....actually, I am the only female. She does tend to like my youngest son the best out of the boys, though. He is 10. She will go to our 13 year old, but not as willingly. I hope this helps.
