It has long been known that bird deaths have occurred from fumes of overheated pans with non-stick cookware. I have long theorized that this may be harmful to humans as well. In olden times, canaries were taken into coal mines to test for the presence of excessive levels of methane gas. If the bird keeled over it was no longer safe for people to be in the mine. Birds have a lower resistance to lethal toxins. History has shown us that industry cannot be counted on to inform us of harmful products that have a high profit potential. Such has been the case with radium watch dials, leaded gasoline and paint, freon refrigerants and now finally non-stick cookware. The EPA has warned pan manufactures to come up with a different pan coating by 2015. It the meantime, do your best to never overheat a pan with non-stick coating or stop using them altogether to protect your birds.
