Greenwing macaw-Kenai
well we had a little bit of a setback with Kenai today. i was sitting on my bet with him on my arm and out of nowhere he starts getting rowdy and loud and then he got a lil bit rough and i told him gentle and he slacked off and then he grabbed a hold of my nose and chomped pretty hard where i now have a 1/4 inch cut in the flesh between my nostrils. i played it pretty cool and didn't react to it and put him into his cage and went and cleaned it up and went back and Kenai had the most apologetic air to him. and i was happy that i had all my flesh and that Kenai was alright. however the problem is that the progress i was making with getting my mom to lose her fear of him was lost because she saw the whole thing happen.

Take heart, Drew! I'm sorry it happened but I think you should view it as a learning experience for both of you. Be mindful that each bird will have its rowdy moments and that Kenai may have simply not yet realized your nose isn't hard like his beak. They don't have a natural reference for such things so the only way for them to learn is through experience. Unfortunately, at times such experience can be painful for us :(

Awww, hope your Mom can get over her fear of Kenai. These big boys can be moody at times, but Kenai is still quite young, right? He's still unsure of how strong he can really be. I have to dodge quickly when Roscoe takes a notion to swipe at my face & in the next instant he is snuggling. They are such drama queens when they want to be. Angel, Roscoe's older brother is not bonded completely to me yet. So I watch more closely when I interact with him as he has more intent to his bites. Roscoe is so full of himself that most of his bites are bluffs.

The more you & Kenai get to know each other the better you will get at reading his body language and knowing if he is bluffing or if he is just not in the mood for attention.

Hahn's macaw, RIP George, Jenday Conure
This was the deciding factor in going with a mini-macaw vs a full-sized bird. Coming from a Jenday Conure I have too much fear of the larger beaks. I love my Hahns, and even though his nips and bites can hurt, I dont fear him and it helps our relationship.

Definitely need to learn the body/eye language a little better. With Miri its an absolute necessity to keep a close eye on her since she's so "moody". I am extremely attentive with her close to my face, for the most part she won't clamp down too hard now (thankfully).

Our Hahn's will draw blood in a heartbeat with her sharp beak.
