i am the mom of three parrots:
Dorothy- African grey (cag)
Bowie- blue and gold macaw
Nellie- hyacinth macaw
Reggie- hyacinth macaw
Marnie- white bellied caique
I am wondering if anyone has had this experience with their macaw. Every night I play on the floor with Moses. (7 month old greenwing) I find it's a great way for him to burn off a little energy before bedtime! For the past week and a half he has started to bob his head (look like he is trying to regurgitate) for me. He does this ALOT! He walks over and bobs and bobs his head. I spoke with the breeder about it because I thought that this was a wierd behavior for such a young bird. However I was told that it wasn't a sexual type behavior just a gesture of his attachment/love for me. Has anyone else experienced this? I have seen other birds do the head bob but not this often!

All of my parrots do the head bob thing. When they do we applaud and say DO THE HAPPY DANCE. and now they do it on command. my Quaker also squawks when he does the happy dance. I just took a natural behavior and put a name to it and encouraged it. If you can't beat them then join them:D:)

I have the same routine with my B&G baby girl. She does the head bob thing and sometimes sticks her tongue out! Weird. She gets really excited and happy. I love it.

Salsa does the same thing. He does it a lot. It's normal behavior.

Ok, I feel better! I guess we should all take it as a compliment!

Niko starts this as soon as I play with him on the couch. And he is persistant with it, too. But I do feel flattered. :D

I have seen the head bobbing thing moreso from Greenwings. My Catalina Doogie likes to head bob to the beat of music. Very much to my surprise Clifford was face to face with a Greenwing down at the Riverside Arts Market and that bird was doing some serious head bobbing. Clifford came home and then wanted to head bob for two days!!! but he soon went back to normal.... I think it might be a learned thing. Doogie would do this side to side head thing and make a breath sound. I was thinking maybe he was trying to immitate the former owner's dogs near the cage panting.

I wasn't paying attention one evening and mine actually managed to "feed" me. Ewww. I understand what he was doing, but now I am more careful not to get fed any more.

i have a pet lovebird and shes constantly doing this to me! it is a sign of their affection it means your bird loves you very much and wants you to know that! dont discourage it but if you dont want your bird to do it try not to trigger it watch when he does it it may be when you pet him somewhere in a specific spot or when you say something.
