weird position?

Hello

This morning Fargo was playing with his toys, i gave him his breakfast, he ate all that, then usually he will sit in his cage for an hour because he knows its too early to play with me hahaha

However, after his breakfast, he went and sat in a weird position, he will usually sleep in that corner, and will play with his foraging toy, but today he crouched over, and just sat there, for maybe 20 minutes..

I looked over my shoulder and saw it, and just thought he was leaning over or something, but then i kept looking and he didnt move...
Me being paranoid jumped up thinking he was really sick, even though his droppings were healthy and he was eating fine...

I asked him to step up, he did fine, i checked his balance, he perched on my hand fine, i gave him a cuddle and put him back, then he flew down and sat with my on the couch!

I have seen him sit like this before, but only when he is on the couch because it has a flat surface, so he just sits like that, or when i scratch under his wing he lifts his wing up and gets low to the ground, but i have never seen him perch like this before!!

I thought it could be a nesting behaviour but he wasnt rubbing against anything, didnt make a single noise, just sat there.. and he didnt act aggressive at all towards me when i got him out :/

The rest of the day he was his usual self, active, eating, doing tricks, flying

I honestly wish I had an answer for you, Tab, but my Niko's never sat like that in his cage.

The only bird who crouches for me is Hunter...but she's a girl and mature

FWIW, Sam purrs like a kitty cat when I snuggle with him. That's not very gentleman-like

Audrey sits like that sometimes, I think our birds are just weirdo's LOL! Nah when Audrey does it, she starts quivering her wings, its her 'begging' stance hah!

Hey Tab... fwiw, Zaf sits like that all the time when he's in cuddle mode. He'll crouch like that with his tail upward when he's snuggling on my chest or when he's on the backrest of the couch relaxing. My guess is Fargo is just trying out new ways to feel comfy . I've found that Macaws really enjoy experimenting with themselves on structures.

Actually reminds me of two macaws mating...minus one macaw... lol

Macaws don't mate with the male on top of the hen... they mate while perched next to each other. It sounds odd, I know, but you'd have to see pictures and videos of it to really understand...


Really don't know if it's a mating thing or just quirky behavior though.

My Coby does this frequently. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have seen youtube videos of Macaws mating side by side. I don't have a answer for you. All I can tell you my conure plays with her toys, eats, etc and sometimes perches in a crotching position. She rubs her beack on the rope pearch sometimes.

Tab, Fargo isn't even 1 yet. There is NO way in "you know where" that his stance is any way, shape or form of sexual nature.

I truly think he's just being his normal self super cutie pie, like the picture Wharf posted, LOL.

Not necessarily... if a bird bonds to you, then they will protect *YOU* from intruders... i.e. anyone that might try to steal you away. Therefore, the bird will be aggressive to people other than you... which may lead to aggression towards you if the person doesn't "back away" - as in, he'll attack you, trying to tell you to get away from the competition.

Just because a bird is young doesn't mean that he or she might not be practicing! Birds can, and will, mate at young ages!


But please, this doesn't mean that Fargo is doing any of that! He might, but then he's probably just a quirky little bird!

If you can give me documentation of a BIG Mac "practicing" at under 1 year, I might buy it.

Well firstly i'm pretty sure he has bonded to me.. It is a bit hard not to, when i am the only person he sees until 6pm which is when everyone comes home, but it is also when he chooses to go to sleep... That being said, on weekends he likes to see everyone..

As Wendy said i would love to see the documentation of a big bird at that age practicing, to me he seems to be in his baby stage still..

Not owning a macaw may i ask where you found this information out ?

So "crouching" behavior would not indicate male or female behavior.

I am sorry but where in that link did it say they can be less than a year old and become sexual ? Did i miss it ?

I understand that you were answering my questions if it COULD because i have never had the experience of owning a macaw before, but then you suggested it MIGHT, when experienced macaw owners have said no..

I dont think there was a reason to state it MIGHT be a sexual activity when there is no documentation about such a young age :S

I think we can all just agree its just Fargo being his usual silly self and making his mumma worried, as i was ALOT more concerned that he was sick, rather than mating
