calling all the minis....

I recently aquired a 6yr old Hahns Macaw. She has had a rough life and I'm her 3rd owner. With love, patience, and time I am sure all will be great.

Anyways, I'd like to reach out to other mini owners, especially hahns owners... connect and maybe share ideas on training and personalities. All my previous experience was cockatoo... needless to say its been an eye opening of differences.

As for personalities...little macaw, big bird mentality. Fearless. Mine never wants to leave my shoulder, and when I try it can amount to a battle of wills. Be mindful of that beak. If not properly maintained it turns into a veritable needlepoint.

A very curious and active breed, mine needs lots of shreddable toys. I get bulk chinese finger traps and fill them with crinkle paper. I also use poplar wood for his chewing toys. I purchase strips from Lowes and drill holes into them, then cut them into 4x2 sizes then run leather strips thru them so I can save money on toys.

He will push your buttons one minute and then steal your heart the next. Thats what Hahnzel does to me all the time, but I really love the little tornado, as does pretty much everyone in my house.

Just following along... I'm getting a Hahns in a couple months.

fearless is right which is why I never let mine out at the same time, our Hahn's will try to take on one of the GW's in a heartbeat.

WarfRat your Hahn's sounds like a pistol. LOL. My noble was way more relaxed than that and had a more even temperament. He did not get aggressive or nippy during hormone season at all. He was not a nippy parrot at all. When it came to food he would edge out my spicy Illiger's macaw in a heartbeat. I have an old picture of Mihijo on a perching basket with my Eclectus Joaquin. Joaquin was still pretty much a baby and Mihijo was less than 5 years I believe.



Mihijo was more into people than other parrots though. He was a laid back mini macaw and never bit or nipped anyone.

Well before my Hans passed away he was similar to wharfs really. Although he was bonded to a blue crowned conure. I just worked with him never letting his little mini macaw attitude get to me and he came around to be great and very trainable quickly.

How are things going with your mini?
My hahn is good most of the time but always wants to be attached to my shoulder. She will wake me up at 8am if I try to sleep in. She is potty trained, says goodnight at bed time and cries when I leave.
She bit me this morning and I have no idea why. She's been bad the last couple of weeks. When she bites I toss her in her cage and cover her up for 30 minutes.
She makes a ton of noise when unloading or loading the dishwasher and changing the trash bags.

Hi. Congrats on your Hahn's. like you my only experience was my Cockatoo Boo. I am a fairly new mom to a little female Hahn's. I git Hahnna at 7 weeks andcshe is now a tad over 6 months. They are remarkable intelligent, theybdo not just mimic, they actually word associate. And, they will entertain you with their luttle devil personalities. Big bird in a small body. I never thought I would love or enjoy another parrot like I did my Boo, unless another Too, they have always been my love. The severe Asthma I developed from the powdervprevents me from having or handling any powdered parrot. The Hahn's, Caique and Senegal were reccomended to me. I did a lot of research and watched a whole lot of youtube videos and decided on the Hahn's. I put a deposit down on Hahnna then met a Caique and fell for this comical little dude and started to second guess my choice. Well, short of it is that I decided to fulfill the commitment I made to buying this little Hahn's and I could not be more pleased. She is as personable as my Too but with a much bigger vocabulary and just as smart if not even more. Since your baby has had such a rough start it will take time and patience but in time you will be rewarded ten fold. I have been in rescue, not birds, dogs, and have seen some of the wirse cases of abuse and have seen the healing and wonderful transitions they have made. Makes it all worth it. As a matter of fact as I type this one of my worse abused dogs that came under my care we kept and is currently sleeping peacefully snuggled next to me. If you look tgrough mynalbum you will see a lot of my Hahnna and some toy ideas. Mt girl lives to untie knots and loves loves loves food especially maccaron, not sure if that is true for all or just her. And contrary to a lot of what is posted or written Hahnna is very sweet and not nippy at all. I am a firm believer in you fet what you put into it and hatevwhen certain breeds are targeted, they do the same with the Pitbull and it iscreallt more about the time you put in, how much handling and teaining etc. Hahnna has also proved the pists wrong about screaming. She does not scream bir demand. I think key to this is giving them a lot tomkeep them busy and also I read rhey are very vocal but a way around this is to teach them to talk, and the way around the nilpiness they claim they are prone tomis constant handling. Captain Jack is a hahns macaw and I think he is the greatest bird I ever had. I love him a lot. He seems calmer and less fearful then a Green Cheek conure. Captain Jack loves to shred toys and even newspaper. He is for the most part calm and easy going. He is somewhat cuddly. I am beginning to think how tame and nice a mini macaw is will usually be determine with how much time you spend with them. I will end by saying I do not think he thinks he is a small bird but compared to a lot of bird species he isn't that small unless compared to bigger parrot species etc.

We have a four month old Yellow Collared Macaw named Loki. She is a cuddle MANIAC. Her absolute most favorite thing is to cuddle up on my chest. She ALWAYS wants to be on my shoulder, which is a constant fight.
It took a while (months longer than my dearly departed Amazon) but now that she understands, she is quite amenable to training, and is really smart.
She loves to eat, and will give just about anything a try.
She only wakes us up if we sleep late, which is like 9am, and when she does, she just softly says " hello?" "Hello?"
She can be nippy, when she's feeling rambunctious, but she's still a baby, so I am trying to teach her not to bite too hard.
I love her tremendously. She's an awesome little girl.

I plan on getting a Hahn's one of these days if I can ever find a breeder with babies. I do plan on spending a lot of time with the baby, and socializing him/her properly, so this is a very useful post. Thanks!

I have a Hahn's who will get a name as soon as the DNA results come in. Any day now... S/he loves to snuggle up to my neck, either on my shoulder of my chest. S/he has toys in her cage that no other birds ever play with, because she's the only one who bothers with them. They're all new/ untouched. S/he hadn't met a toy s/he doesn't adore.

They say that finishing off the hand raising doesn't make a baby closer to a human than if you get them just weaned. I disagree. This is second pet I've had that I raised from a tiny chick (the first one had an accident and sadly died) . There's been no need for a getting used to you phase, because we did that at three weeks of age. I don't have to worry too much about her biting because s/he knows who I and and I know her quirks and her diet. So far, it's working well.
