Hi all, I am considering rehoming a 6 year old male blue and gold but I thought would seek some advice from this experienced community.

The first and most significant issue is that the macaw, who is 6, has lived his whole life in the same room as a moluccan cockatoo. He does spend a good amount of time outdoors when the weather is nice but I am concerned. The owner is happy to have a vet check prior to me taking the bird. Would a vet be able to easily tell if permanent respiratory damage has occurred?

Also, at what age do macaws normally begin puberty? I have heard anything from 3 to 8 but I was hoping for some more insight.

He is otherwise very well cared for and friendly. He gets a diet of fresh food, nuts and harrisons and is very trusting of people.

Thanks for the help

It depends on how their air is circulated and how big the room is where they're keeping them together. By keep them together doesn't always mean the macaw is going to get sick. A lot of macaws are just allergic to the dander of the cockatoo.

My B&G started his hormones when he was about 8 but didn't go into his full hormone cycle until he was 10 years old. It varies from bird to bird but some can take 10+ years before they're fully mature in that matter.

IF he's friendly and have good diet, you should at least consider him. But just be aware of their beak, I would not suggest you to have him on your shoulder ever or have him near your face. You just never know what they would do. It's especially important to know this once his hormone hits. And also if he picks you, it's easier to bond with a bird that chooses you over you picking him instead. We always allows the bird to choose if they want to be with us or not, never force the issue!!!

Is he coming to, or leaving from your home?

I believe the poster meant to say adopting from someone rehoming their B&G Macaw....
