Hi

I just adopted a 6 year old Hahns Macaw. The lady that i got her from had her since she was hatched and she told me that she is kinda nippy and kinda prefers men but i'm hping that with time and work she could bond with me.I could use some tips about earning her trust and how to get her to not be so nippy.I'm not sure what sex she is cause the lady never had her DNA'd.:green2:
LOL!!:grey:

great! glad to see you adopting rather than purchasing. it may take some time, but with patience & love (treats help) she will come around. at the parrot rescue i volunteer, there is a sulfer crested 'too that is supossedly dangerous. he lets me give him scratches. just take your time with her. you more than likely will be getting bit. don't take it personal, and learn her body language. this will help in avoiding a lot of bites. good luck. oh. also. a large cage & a good diet is important. a happy bird will be a lot less likely to bite.

Just about any fruits and veggies that are good for us are good for them. My Auggie is a fruit bat and has never taken to too many veggies - he LOVES grapes, mango, papaya, kiwis, and just about every other fruit. For veggies bell peppers are a great way to go: some good vitamins and lots of colors to choose from. Broccoli is nutrient packed and fun to tear apart.

You'll likely find she has her own tastes, but until you figure out what she likes, what she'll tolerate, and what not to bother with just try out any fruits and veggies (except for those on the toxic list which can be found in other threads).

There are also fun ways to have food for birds. I occasionally get those little "single serving" boxes of raisins - just give her the whole box, it's fun to shred and then she gets a healthy snack out of it.
