Josie - blue and gold macaw
So, we are watching tv tonight like normal and Josie is with us in the room. She was her here cage quietly talking so Ben muted the tv so we could hear what she was saying. She was sitting on her favorite perch saying 'I crying' and singing bird bird bird. I have no idea where she learned that phrase. She always sings bird bird bird but the I crying part is new and out of nowhere. I feel bad but I don't think she has any clue what crying is.

Oh, it must sound sad.....
Maybe try to teach her something upbeat, something cheerful...... :)
She probably picked it up from the radio, CD's or TV if you haven't told her that.
They are funny, aren't they?

Awww bless her beautiful soul

Don't feel bad, she is just trying to talk

She probably heard it being said, perhaps on the TV or the radio

Our Hahns Macaw mutters to himself the minute his cage gets covered. It kills me, only tries to yell hello and hi during the day, then at night in a low low voice he just mutters away...hello hello hello,,hi, step up step up step up, it is a garbled low voice, almost like "you covered me up, I'll just sit here and talk to myself".

Hahn's macaw, RIP George, Jenday Conure
My Hahns does the same thing. He laughs, says "come here", mutters and gives kisses once the cover goes on. He also tells me, "shut up" if I make too much noise coming to bed.

I remember hearing about this from the scientist that cared for Alex the Einstein Congo African Grey. She mentioned that sometimes he'd do that at night and in one show she mentioned that it could be "crib talk." That just like human babies who practice words at night that parrots do the same.
