My macaws are my #1 joy in my life. I am regularly out in public with them putting my B&G Kayko on the arms of people and especially children as young as 2. Kayko would not think of biting anyone. I usually accompany him with Clifford my Scarlet as Clifford talks well to anyone. Unfortunately he would also bite everyone so badly they would have to be hospitalized. In nine years he has never been on the arm of anyone else but me until last night. I took the birds to Jax beach seawalk, and met a man at a restaurant there that owns a B&G and an Greenwing. He was highly interested in also buying a Scarlet and eagerly wanted to try holding Clifford even if he was badly bitten. He had a piece of bread in one hand to distract his attention and I was ready to protect his face from attack. Much to my surprise he DID NOT bite him and was very interested in eating the bread!!! :11: This gives me real hope that I may someday be able to socialize Clifford into going on the arms of strangers. He certainly has been present to watch what happens with Kayko for the past 5,000 times. I didn't think this was ever going to be possible without a chainmail sleeve:)

Skittles - scarlet macaw
That is great news about Clifford. It gives me hope for Skittles. She loves the attention of strangers when I take her out on weekends, but she is a biter when given the opportunity.

She is getting better the more I take her out. Now, if I scratch her head, she will let just about anyone pet her back. I guess I have nine more years to go... :D

I would make every attempt to have (brave) others try to hold Skittles at an early age. I neglected to do that and things only got worse. I wish I could find a nice chain-mail sleeve to slide over the arm for that frontal attack bite.
