i got my hahn's a week ago, and the pet shop said it has 7 months, and imported from south Africa, but the shoulders of the bird are pretty red, is that means the hahn's is no longer a baby? or 7 months baby can also have red shoulders?

Strange, aren't Hahns from South America, rather than South Africa?

Hahns are from south america, but it could be from a breeder in south Africa possibly?

Unfortunately I am not experienced with hahns and can't say if that means the bird is young or not, but we do have some hahns parronts who can probably help :)

At 7 months of age there will not be much red to speak of I am afraid. Sounds like your bird may be a bit older than they are saying.

My Hahn's was hatched June 8, so that would make her about a week shy of six month and she is JUST starting to show some color change but no red yet, just ver faint difference where the reds will come out. Sounds like your baby may be closer to a year from what I have read about color, but this is my first Hahn's so I am no expert, just did a lot of reading. This is my Hahnna, just taken last night. As you can see no red on her shoulders, just a faint difference in color change from when we got her at 7 weeks. Elaine and Hahnna

Yeah, definitely older then seven months. How is he handling wise, social, hippy etc? He should have supplied you with proper papers I would think that would have included a hatch date, although they can always be altered.

thank you Elaine. The pet shop didn't provide me any paper, and just told me it had 7 months, but i didn't really believe that because all businessmen tell lies. I wanna know the age of my Hahn's only to know if he still can be tamed, because someone said that old bird can not be tamed or very hard to be. But i think my bird is still young or not too old to be tamed......he was named MouMou, a very intelligent one, not that social, only eat food from my hand or his bowl, it is a quiet boy, rarely scream, when i 'm back home everyday he looks happy and when i approach the cage comes fast to ask for seeds. But still not totally tamed. not willing to come to my hand, only take seeds from my hand.....
your Hahnna is so cute, and he must be totally tamed, if i had other choice i 'd like to have a unweaned bird...it is really good to play with him and to touch his feathers and to give him a scratch, but now i'll wait with patient

Hi Danilo,
I wouldn't worry too much :) You can tame him down at any age. You have a very clever little bird there. Also, although they generally don't live as long as the big macaws, hahns can still live a loooong time so I wouldn't let that worry you either. With luck you and your new friends trust will continue to grow over the next few decades :)

Keep working on him, he will come around soon.

Danilo, take your time with him. He will learn to trust you and soon be your best friend. Even if he is older he can still be tamed. I have seen wild caught birds back in the day, even tame over time. Just earn his trust. Not sure what kind of food is available where you are but a seed diet is not the best for him. Try to start him on fresh veggies and some fruits. My Hahn's loves mango and kiwi and strawberries. I also make a big veggie mash for her, and add tri pasta and beans to it. As far as a dry mix for her all day food you may be able to get online. You do bot really want to use seed as a daily diet but if he likes it, you can use it as a treat when he steps up or comes to you etc. E

As far as life span, they can live 50 years from what I read if on the proper diet etc. Hahnna is my first Hahn's so I am learning too Danillo. :)

I just watch your video in Facebook Hahn's Macaw page, Hahnna talks well! She is really a great talker. I am still on the way to tame MouMou, i just hope one day MouMou can also talk that well as Hahnna.

my Hahns seems do not like fruit and veggie that much, but i still try to give him fruit and veggie every day. i give him two times of mix seeds (morning and evening), each time 1 hour to finish, and at lunch time, i give him mix fruit and veggie(carrot, apple, blueberry, papaya, corn...)and give him 2 hours to eat, he don't eat too much fresh food, so i give him separately with dry food and more time to eat.
