Skin Babies & Feather Babies!!! HELP!!!

Hello everyone!!! So I have owned a B&G for almost 2 years now, he will be 3 this March. I am delivering my first baby end of February.

Anybody have any advice on how to deal with these two monsters in the house?? LOL

Ever since I got pregnant I have gotten Aro (bird) used to being in his room alone outside of his cage for longer periods of time, also to be with us in the living room but inside his cage, but he sees us and eats breakfast and dinner with us until he starts grinding and then it's bed time. But pretty much for the last 8 months he has been learning to be more "independent" since when the baby comes I will not have all the time in the day to hang with him as much as I use to. He is a happy bird with a shower with me, 5-10 minutes of playing and cuddles and just being in the same room with us. His feathers are amazing and he's the healthiest/prettiest bird ever!! ( said by his vet!!!!, I'm a proud mom) so I know these changes didn't affect him.

He is very sweet and gets along with everybody and does not bite at all. Just the warnings nibbles but never blood.

Well that is his history!!!

I know that I will and should get an air purifier for babies room as we all know how much dust they release. They will both live in separate rooms.

Any advice guys? The noise level I've read good and horrible things, obviously baby has been hearing Aro scream for 9 months and they will live with doors in-between them, and they will both get used to the noise each one will make.

Well sorry for the long post!!!
Any help is appreciated!!!!!

Hi,
I didn't get my Fids until my kids were born. But I will say don't worry about the noise. Typically babies will sleep through just about anything. Now there will be rough nights, but you can condition both Aro and the baby to each other's crys. Of course always keep your baby safe around Aro, but you can include him in the babies life.

I would treat Aro as the older sibling. This means don't ignore him when you are taking care of the baby. When you nurse (most reward experience of my life!) talk to Arg and give him treats. When he seems interested in the baby tell him "good boy". Try really hard not to "chastise" him for waking the baby or being too loud. Include him in the experience. He is going to be jealous, so be sensitive to that.

I had a huge Mastiff when I was pregnant with my first child. She was my dog, no doubt. But once my daughter was born, Charlie was so protective. On walks she walked up by the stroller, not next to me. She took my daughter as her own without me doing anything. I know birds are not dogs, but animals Know who we love! Just include him!

Good luck and Congratulations!! Being a mom is the most amazing thing you will ever do. Ask for help so you don't get overwhelmed and take care of yourself:)

I agree with ConureAZ- make sure Aro is still included, and treat him as a sibling...

As far as noise- while baby sleeps you can turn on the radio or a white noise machine...this will help cover any noise Aro makes during nap time. My son got so used to the radio while sleeping he could sleep through my amazon's screams  My son will be 2 in a few months and now he can sleep through budgies squabbling, a galah chattering, and construction noise lol

We also have baby gates to keep the kid away from the bird cages, and he's never left unsupervised with my galah (I'm more worried about him hurting her than vice versa).

The REAL challenge starts when they turn into toddlers- I'm constantly after my kid trying to keep him alive while also trying to keep my galah from getting herself in trouble lol my days are always busy and adventurous ;)

Congratulations on your baby and good luck!! :)

We are looking for a bird for our family. It's very much like we are pregnant and waiting for the day the new addition comes to the family!
I agree with treating him as a sibling. I would allow the bird to be a part of the babies life. Talking to him about the baby, changing the diaper on the floor, with bird on play stand or in cage.... Just do everything as if they are siblings. I keep thinking about their comprehension abilities, (3-8 year old)he will understand someone new has come. Then think about his emotional understanding (2-3 year old) he will be upset he isn't the only one around. It will be an adjustment period, but by the time your baby is a child that bird will feel like the luckiest bird alive, with the best family ever. It may be hard at first, as it is when you have other children, for the older children, but the end result will be phenomenal.

Good luck, it will be nice to "watch" the family grow and the challenges unfold if you stick around. Far to many decide they can't keep the birds, and it's sad to see.

I understand they don't get the attention they may have before, but it's normal to have jealousy amongst siblings ;) so be prepared and be understanding. You are their family. Through the good and the bad :)

Thank you so much for the encouraging words!!

Will deft treat Aro as her big brother. I have been telling him about her and he really is such a sweet bird! I know things will change and life will be hectic, but I would NEVER get rid of Aro he is my responsibility and I choose to add him to my family why should he be put on the back burner now that a different kid of baby is coming to the house.

Ok so baby gates for when baby is crawling all over the place!

I always knew that he would be included, I plan on hanging out with both of them, Aro inside the cage when baby is younger (Aro is free-flight and I really don't want to clip his wings) but I have to be careful that he flies to my head or my husbands since he LOVES us!! =) but I will make it work. I know my fid and I will get to know my kid so I am not stressed at all, but I was wondering if there was anything else that I could do!

THANK YOU GUYS SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also a Air Purifier is a must guys??? People get them when they don't even have pets and some get them when they have dogs or cats, we know how much dust these fide have, so I assumed I would need one!

Having a air purifier is essential due to you having a baby and it would be healthier for everyone in the household not having to breath in the dust.

Baby gates are essential in my house. Lol

We use these: http://amzn.com/B000U5FOT2

They're metal, very sturdy, and the gate is easy to operate with one hand ;) (you'll become quite talented at holding baby in one arm and doing everything else with the other! LOL)

BTW (voice of experience here) get used to hearing a baby cry,LOL , you'll be hearing it for many years after the baby has grown up. They're (birds) quick to learn what gets attention. Both myself and my 3 kids grew up with large parrots, wouldn't trade it for anything.
