"Green Mascot Parrot" ...????

Somebody please enlighten me.. there's an ad near me for a "Green Mascot Parrot" and they state that as if it's a correct(or existing...) species. Is this just a name I haven't heard? Or am I correct to assume this is actually a MILITARY MACAW?
Atleast I think it's a military.. it's hard to tell for sure, as I'm definitely not an expert on macaws.





I can't help but notice in the second picture the feathers look soiled. Maybe he's just damp or something, but still.
See? This is why I wasn't born into a rich family, because then I'd have a huge house with a big backyard and it would be filled with birds! :54:

Never heard of a mascot macaw... Only thing that shows up on Google is a bunch of people in green macaw mascot fursuits...

That's what I thought! I figure if google doesn't come up with anything that looks like an actual bird (aside from people in costumes..) then it likely isn't correct, or real, unless it's just really unheard of.. I know some people have certain names for certain birds depending on location, but I've never heard that used anywhere.

Looks like a Military Macaw (my favorite big bird at the rescue Chyna is a military). It looks like a military, but not much tail for a military. But that could just be part of the overall messy look of the poor guy. Could be a hybrid, but that answer would need to come from one of the real macaw experts around here

Hmm.. Where'd Birdman when you need em'?
It breaks my heart to know people go out and get these big, beautiful, yet needy parrots and they don't even know enough about them to correctly identify the species.

Military macaw definitely. no tail though. WHY would someone call it a "mascot parrot"? Probably a generic green parrot is a team mascot somewhere, and they thought it looked like that.

Oh, and I'm not a Macaw expert, but I know my species (rare dog breeds too ) it's one of my USELESS talents :52:. There's a giant more rare look-a-like called a Buffon's, but I'm certain it's a shabby Military

I don't know of anywhere in specific near me that has a Military Macaw as a mascot, or any green parrot specifically, but maybe like a high school or something..? Still weird. I'm thinking they got him from a pet shop and he was their "mascot parrot" for the store, until they decided to sell/home him, so they just called him a mascot parrot thinking it was the species.
I dunno, I just don't know how else that could come about.

If you're thinking of adopting... Militarys are known to be the biggest babies. Many of the pics you see online of the macaws on their backs in someone's arms like a baby, often a military. Not to say every Military is a sweetheart, but generally speaking they are super sweet natured

Pffffft... Don't even get me started!!! I'd have to send you my boyfriend's contact info so you can convince HIM..
As much as I'd love to have a mac one day, they're asking $850 for him and his cage(Isn't too bad, I know.) but we won't be moving into a house until the end of this year/next year.. and I don't think us(or the neighbors) would be too thrilled to have two conures, an eclectus AND a macaw living under the same apartment roof!!
I've already convinced Brad that we need to get a Caique when we move.. and he seems to be okay with that.. but I don't think I could come home with a mac instead. My puppy dog eyes only take me so far!! Haha.
If I were more social I'd ask if I can come by to hang out with him and give him a bath.. but, introverted me will just admire from afar and pray he goes to a knowledgeable, loving home.

Edit: I'm bad at typing things. .___. Let me clarify: We're moving from or efficiency/studio apartment into a larger, one bedroom apartment around June. So we'll have space to move Yoshi in with us, build a nice playstand for him, etc. The house, however has to wait until we move about an hour and a half outside of town, where we will be in a more permanent home setting. (the owner of the shop Brad works at is opening another shop out there sometime in the next year, and Brad is going to run it. So we'll be able to afford moving all the way out there and into a house.) We figure when we move Yoshi in with us we'll just introduce him to our neighbors(depending on his temperament by then. Maybe just take a photo.) and explain that he is a big bird, and he is able to get loud, however he rarely does and it's only in the daytime. And then hope he doesn't get loud/no one complains. I feel like people would be less willing to comply with a big scary beak on a military mac.

Caique would probably be a better fit with the smaller guys and the noise the macaws can make.... ahhhhhh....

Speaking of noise How is Yoshi getting along? Have I missed any posts on him, I may have, so apologies if you posted and I'm asking a stupid question!!!

Pssh, there are no stupid questions. I may have mentioned him in a few scattered posts in various sections but I haven't made any new threads regarding him as of late.
Yoshi is getting along fine, he's starting coming out of his cage on his own more often which is nice. He never goes far, but we can get him to walk closer to us by prompting him with pine nuts in a bowl on the floor. Hehe. He still growls at you if you ignore him, he likes to make sure he's heard! Little progress is much better than no progress/regression, yknow?
Over the weekend my dad came down with the flu, so unfortunately I'm leaving his care up to my dad's girlfriend, as being pregnant my immune system is lower than usual and I really don't need to catch the flu right now! Ick!
I'm probably going to build him a perch/stand sometime soon, although I have absolutely NO idea how. I'd like it to be much different than my conures' stand, more of a java tree type thing than anything. I'd like to make him something that he can sit on while I clean his cage, and with the weather getting nicer I may take him into the fenced backyard if he stays on the stand so we can hose down his cage.. (Of course, without the dogs, and a close eye on him. He goes straight to the ground when he tries to fly, so unless he digs out from under the fence we should be able to corral him pretty efficiently with the two of us.. hehe.) And maybe he'll enjoy a light mist from the hose, too.
There's my recent ramblings about Yoshi. Hehe. I still haven't seen any pin feathers coming in, but he's dropping a flight feather/tail feather every so often and maybe 5~ regular feathers every few days. He isn't pulling them, they don't look chewed or mutilated, but maybe he's molting soon! It would be nice if he would get all his pretty feathers back.

Some progress is definitely better then none or going backwards, agree with you on that!!!

Definitely stay away from your dad's for now... even a bit after he's better, sure the flu will get passed around a bit!

I am so happy to hear Yoshi is doing better, even if just a bit, and he's coming out and being a happy bird, love the growl... video that when you can!!

I actually do have it on video..!! (Well, one of his growls. He has many. )
I posted it a while ago on a separate thread. It's sort of long, being 3 minutes, but you'll hear his growl pretty early and then random sounds along with what I feel like is him imitating a young child/infant.

It sounds like naa naa naa but some of it does sound like a waaaah of a baby crying. Was he in a home with kids?

That's the funny part- I have no idea. I'd like to think that I'm his 3rd home. The guy I got him from said a friend gave him up, because he didn't have time for him. He didn't tell me how long they'd had him before giving him up, if they were his first home, or anything. Of course I know how quickly a bird can be passed around in 3 years.. and it may explain the plucking a little more, but part of me hopes he had some sort of stability for the first chunk of his life.
The guy I got him from was around my age, he lived with his dad(who was the one breeding the birds.) and there were no small children. Just a little chihuahua. I'm betting his previous home had kids, so I'm literally sitting on a ticking-time-bomb of sounds.. haha. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from him. He still surprises me with new sounds

Man, I wanted an ekkie so bad, but don't have the space, money, experience, etc to deal with one. He's adorable. Congrats.

Thank you! I wanted an ekkie for a long while, but I had given up on getting one. I had figured I would end up with a mini macaw or a small 'too. Until someone on this forum mentioned an ad for one near me, and even though I didn't have the money I figured I'd give it a shot(with taxes being right around the corner.) he was in a too-small cage with nothing but seeds and a bell to play with, and I managed to talk the guy into selling him to me for less than the posted price, a steal for an ekkie. Grabbed him the bigger cage(in the same day!) and took him home and set him up. And I'm so glad I did. Things fell in place at just the right time and he's been a joy. You'll find your perfect bird. Or, should I say, he/she will find you!
