My greenwing is starting to get her primary flight feathers back. I really like the way they look where they cross each other at the base of the tail. Is there an alternate way of wing clipping that leaves the first few primaries but still keeps the bird grounded?

The following link brings you to a page all about wing clipping. A "Show Clip" as the article states does leave some of the primary feathers crossing. I recommend talking to your vet or whoever clips your birds wings and see what they are comfortable with or if they have suggestions.

Several times I've clipped my Greenwing's wings and left the last feather on each wing. It works very well, he can only fly down and the 2 remaining feathers look really pretty. Leaving those 2 feathers shouldn't be a problem. If you have some one doing the clipping just ask them to leave the last feather on each wing. I'm glad you get you bird's wings clipped, there are posters up on my street that someone is looking for a lost B&G. All my birds wings are clipped and we go to the beach the park the pet store, every where.

The "show clip" can leave the last feather on each side to cross. You just have to be careful because not they are out there alone and could get hung on cage bars, toys, etc.

Hi, we leave the last two feathers on each wing unclipped when we do our Alexendrine's wings and it works quite well. I agree with you that it does make them look much better.

Hey, Thank you all for the info. I will leave the last two feathers. She has not yet even tried to fly but I bet that instinct runs pretty deep and if I left her wings to grow who knows what could happen. she is outside with me for hours and hours every day and I need to keep her safe and home. thanks again.

I will tell you honestly I dont know much about the different clips. I generally cut the firx 6 of Dusty's primaries. I do believe Rileys Mom has a point. I could imagine leaving the end primaries may cause problems with the cage and toys.

I go down 7 on each side. I have a friend who did the "show cut" with her B&G. He was hanging upside down chewing on a toy and her dog came running around the corner, spooked the bird and the long feather got caught between the cage bars as he was falling to the bottom of the cage. It tore the skin at the shaft. After some hysterics from my friend and quite a bit of blood from the bird, we got him fixed up good as new and he no longer has the "show cut". It does look nice, but can cause problems.
