We've all heard it. That bird is going to take your finger off some day! Macaws are aggressive. They're feathered buzz saws!

They're not suitable to be around children. And they should never be allowed on shoulders, or anywhere near your face...

I thought I would start a thread showing them as the attention oriented lap birds most owners know them to be... Please add to this!

Hahaha! Sweet thread, Mark! And you're right. These supposed "feathered buzz saws" do get a bad rap. I've been a bit nervous around macaws, myself. (Just ask Wendy! Ha!) People hear about the damage they are CAPABLE of inflicting and focus solely on that.

Another poster from a while back put it into a bit of perspective for me, though. It's not terribly different from being around a large, tame dog. (In terms of damage potential, not in terms of instinctual behavior.) A large dog is CAPABLE of doing horrendous amounts of damage with its teeth, yet you don't really think about that when he is friendly, properly trained and socialized. Shouldn't be any different with a macaw, right?

Anyhow, love all of these pics! Such sweet birds. Keep them coming!

Dangerous beasts...Loving dolls. I can see both sides of this argument and propose a third-party solution. I will, out of the goodness of my own heart, investigate and cuddle each of these macaws to provide a final judgment. I feel it is the only real solution. :D

Love all these pics! Keep them coming!

Greenwings are just the most amazing birds... Loved the video. My GW is also a total lap bird.

As I said many times, there are basically two types of macaws. Mush macs, and not mush macs. If you work with them, you get this. If you don't, you get the kind that people complain about...

And that really is the difference.

And the opposite is also true. The one's people complain about? Once they get outside, and get worked with... once they open up to you, they get progressively mushier...

I've only had one macaw that didn't turn completely around, and 32 years in solitary confinement will do that to you... and even that bird, with his own kind now, in an outdoor flight, is king of the flight, and is thriving!
