Greetings everyone!
I have decided that I will be adopting a blue and gold macaw from Daniel and Theresa Walthers of Winding Woods Farm!

I won't be expecting a bird here for another six months to a year, but would like to start getting my home ready for the bird now, and my first step will be to get a cage ready.

i'm having some trouble finding a cage for my macaw, i want to get something big enough for him or her to be happy and comfortable in when i'm not home.

would anyone mind sharing which size of a cage would accomplish this or even show me which cages you use for your macaw and are happy with?

Thank you!

CAG - Willis T.
Greenwing - Auggie

Avian Adventures Grande Dome top, does not require any tools to assemble. I have a smaller one for my African Grey and a larger one for my Harlequin and next week I expect delivery of the Grande for my recently adopted B&G

I have an Avian Adventures flat-top w/a play gym on top for my BGM - 42"w x 45"h x 30"d. Height and width are important - high enough so their tail doesn't drag on the (inevitably) feces and food-covered floor, and wide enough so they can stretch their wings comfortably.

Pros and cons about AA cages - I like the fact that when the food cup doors are shut, the bird can't remove the cups and dump the food. Yes, no tools for assembly, so no screws for a busy parrot to undo. But my cage is also powder-coated finish and after 7 years the paint is flaking off.

None at the moment -- I volunteer at a bird rescue, where I've made various avian friends
Just wanted to say, congrats and thank you for adopting a macaw! (Or any bird, for that matter). The bigger the cage, the better. Macaws also love playstands and large perches. Some of the macaws at the bird rescue where I volunteer don't have cages or are hardly ever in their cages.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
I wouldn't get anything smaller than 40 by 30 for a big mac. And bigger is better.

Mine both prefer their "human" playstand... they are super attention oriented, and they are pair bond birds. They want to be with you. It's their basic nature.

BB loves it . BF put it together by himself while I was at work. The only thing I would make sure of is run your hand over the whole cage. I did find 3 shape spots where paint dripped and dried. They do send touch up paint with it .

My B&G has a 40x30 and if I had money, he'd have a 48x36 dometop. But he's had his current cage for a while now, it came with him when we got him. I'm guessing that I'll be replacing it in a few years. Gotta save some money first. :/
