Something happened to Cosmo yesterday afternoon after a morning at the vet.

Oh my gosh....I'm melting here!!! And I know you had to have been melting just the same when Cosmo snuggled up to you like that!!

Yeah, these little guys can be big time velcro birds. On your shoulder, pressed up against the side of your neck...

Plus they're pretty goofy. They're also really good trick birds.

It's all about getting them to do it the first time or two...

Once you get them over the hump, you're pretty much golden.

Progress is often, you don't even have to show me that twice...

And once a pair bond bird bonds, that's it!

Which can actually be a problem with these little guys. Overbonding can be an issue. So having him just step up for strangers is beneficial. That way he doesn't bite people who aren't you...

But yeah, it's pretty amazing.

I haven't let him up on my shoulder yet. When I let him up there, I probably should let him up on my terms, right? My friend has an OWA that is a Velcro shoulder bird. He goes up there and won't come of without a fight. But he's at least 35 yes old and not well socialized.

Hahn's are generally good shoulder birds, if you train them properly.

First order of business is bite pressure training and step up and down on command. Second order of business is when I say it's time to come down, I mean it. No arguments, and you'll get a treat for doing it. [It's gonna happen whether you like it or not...]

I'm trying to teach him the difference between biting and being gentle. We're still working on it. When he gets carried away I put him back on his perch and then try again when he calms down. He steps up, but not on command. Any time you put your fingers near him he steps up. Or he'll run to your hand and jump on.

Especially when you're doing something that doesn't require a birdie on your hand. Lol

Sounds like you don't need the command...

My step up command seems to be in the form of a question these days: "You wanna come?"

Step up would be a yes.

Actually I walk by and they put their foot up in the air. (I don't always obey the command...)

Haven't tried that yet. He seems to get excited too quickly some times. When he gets better at the "No Bite" I'll give it a whirl.
He doesn't seem to be on his back, but I only once and he freaked out.

Yeah. Other wise you end up with a bunch of pinholes, and a leaking finger.

Hasn't discovered playing on his back yet. Haven't seen one of these little guys that didn't end up doing it though... give him a ball to play with. That usually does it.

I got some ping pong balls I'll give him. I also have those rattan vine like ones, but its bigger than his head and he seems to be intimidated by it.
