So as you may know, I own a Red Bellied poi, which is highly regarded as the quietest parrot (which of course is still loud, but volume wise they don't get too bad at all).

My wife is very interested in buying a Hahn's Macaw, but I'm concerned about the difference in volume. Obviously, two birds regardless of species are going to be much louder than a single bird, but I was wondering about the difference in peak volume (as opposed to general chattiness/whistling/flock calling/etc.)

Does anyone know the comparable? ie A Hahn's is quieter than a Sun Conure but louder than a GCC etc.

Thanks!

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Hahns generally don't tend to be screamers...

They can be kinda hyper when they're young.

Any idea of an "average" volume comparable? I see they are listed as "moderate" on most parrot sites, but there's quite a varying range of "moderate". I know South American birds in general are a bit louder overall.

This gives you a fair idea of volume. So really, I'd consider them at the fairly low end of the spectrum myself.

Certainly not amazon, or even most conure loud.

Hi - I have an 18 year old female Hahn's that has been with us since she was 6 months old. Her ordinary voice is not loud, but I would characterize her scream as at least a 7 on a 1-10 scale. Actual volume is probably moderate, but being a small bird, it is quite high pitched and piercing. It does hit the painful mark sometimes, especially if she sees something she feels duty bound to warn us about, such as a dog going by on the street. She has many endearing qualities, and we do love her, but that said, after one of these screeches we sometimes look at each other and say, "tell me again...who's idea was it to get a parrot?"

Cosmo - Hahn's Macaw
My Cosmo is generally not loud, but when he calls for me he can be generally loud. He only does that when he greats me in the morning or when I move into another room and he wants to be by me. He definitely is not as loud as a sun conure, but if he squawked like that all day long it would definitely give you a headache. :)

As an owner of a sun conure, I can tell you that they have a scream that can make your ears ring! I doubt a Hahns macaw is that loud, but I hear that they can be loud too, if they want to. The trend seems to be mornings, coming home from work, and line of sight screaming. I can handle that with my sun conure, so I can't see a Hahns being a problem. Where are you planning on getting one, by the way? I had trouble finding a breeder in Alberta, so you'd likely have to have one shipped from the east.

Thanks for the great responses everyone!

The timeline isn't quite set, we're just entertaining the idea right now. Albert just went into his first molt, so he's pretty crabby of late anyhow.

Alberta seems to be a wasteland for breeders (Albert came from Vancouver), but I have been in contact with a couple Hahn's breeders in Ontario.
