We’ve had our GW for about 7 weeks now but last night she took us totally by surprise! We were in the living room and she was playing on top of her cage doing her regular Macaw sounds when suddenly she began mimicking voices as if two people were screaming at each other. Then she let out a loud “SHUT UP! OR YOU’RE GONNA GET IT!!!”*in an angry voice like we’ve never heard before.

It was almost like listening to a sound clip from her previous home. It was rather frightening to be honest. I can only imagine what was going on there...
That’s the thing with rehomes...you’re never totally sure about their past and what they must have gone through. Might it explain some of her aggressive behaviour? Anyway, she is with us now and hopefully will take in all the love we give her.

That is absolutely heartbreaking!! Espresso plays some horrible soundclips from her old home occasionally as well. Give her some extra love today!

That would make me so sad. I hate to think what she must have gone through or witnessed :(. A person who is abusive to people (even if it's verbal) is not typically kind to animals.

Hearing that would have upset me, as well. I'm so glad she is with you now and is receiving all the love she deserves.

Yes and we feel privileged to have this opportunity to share our home with her.

Have to admit that, although her cage is in our living room where we watch tv, we almost spend more time watching her preen and go through her antics than we do watching tv! Lol

That truly breaks my heart. I experienced my first rehome this week alongside the breeder of my new baby. The bird is obviously mentally and physically distraught. Sad, sad..

Holy smokes! Sure leaves you wondering what all she has seen and heard, doesn't it? I bet you had quite the stunned look on your face when you heard that coming out of her beak.

Sooo happy she's with you now!!

The first few days after we rescued sissy, she said some weird things as well. All angry fighting words. The one she still says is "shut up I'll kick ya" ...we watched in horror as the previous owner kicked her cage...she became mine within minutes.

BB does the same now and then. He will yell shut *&& up with such a mean tone . I have also heard What ever and stop it . I want to take the person that did this to him put them in a cage and spend just one day yelling and spraying them with a fire hose.

Its the tone that gives me chills . BF had never been a bird person. After hearing BB say these things with such emotion he admitted it broke his heart to think anyone could yell at a poor bird like that.

1 BFA- Kiwi. Hatch circa 98', forever home with us Dec. 08'
 So sad she had to either witness abuse or was being abused herself. And that she remembers it so clearly. I bet in time though, in a loving home, saying those things will become less or forgotten altogether!

Out of the 3 things Kiwi says, f-you is one of them. Someone clearly told him that a lot, as he says it in context when he's mad at you or your annoying him:( Thankfully, since being with us it has gone from very clear what he was saying to much more garbled (since we NEVER say that to him or each other!).

Yep. Says a lot.

Kinda indicates this bird was an attention screamer at one point...

Which means the bird was probably locked up for long periods of time and ignored... (Which in and of itself could cause aggression issues. Until the new attention pattern is established.)

We use the phrase "That's too loud!" around here.
We do not use SHUT UP.... Not with the birds, or each other.
And yelling at a bird doesn't work. (You whisper.)
Hitting a bird only makes them angry and defensive... and destroys trust.

Yelling at them doesn't cause aggression, it just makes them louder. Ignoring them for long periods of time does. They hate it, and they will get even... usually the second you let them out and they are in "hurt and angry mode."

Pecker bird used that one in context too when he was angry... or when he didn't want to do something... or when you put too many carrots in his treat cup, and not enough of the other goodies...

She was a very funny bird... and there were times when getting cussed out by a bird in appropriate context was absolutely hysterical... couldn't help myself.

It never ceases to amaze me what some people think passes for "appropriate discipline" with their pets...

And then THE BIRD is labeled "mean" or "maladjusted" or what ever...

mine yells "SHUT... UUUUUUUP!" either at her self after a screaming fit, Tess if she's making noise... or more commonly the neighbor's four yapping dogs.

Crazy and sad. A few days ago, Buddy out of the blue said "Love you", then a few days later we had a "Love you" contest. This was the first time I heard him say than since we took him in over a year ago. I love it though but it's sad to hear what other rehomes hear and learn. Stay positive.
