What Happened to the Lutino Macaws?

Several years ago pictures surfaced of several albino-like macaw chicks that appeared in a clutch of B&Gs. AFA magazine ran a story on them and they were rumored to be in Austin Texas. I never heard any more about them; if rebreeding the same pair produced any more, if the birds were fertile and produced themselves or what? The pictures below show the almost pre-historic monster like chicks that grew into beautiful specimens that are somewhat yellow looking from the blood inside the feathers. Surely you could retire on what they were worth. Does anyone know any more what happened to them? Double-click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Re: What Happened to the Lutino Macaws?

I believe there were 5 chicks. The female broke her leg and died during surgery. The 4 males have all been paired with normal hens. It will be awhile before we know if they pass these genetic gene on as these are young birds.

Re: What Happened to the Lutino Macaws?

I find them unusual, but not really attractive, maybe its the red eyes kind of spooky

Re: What Happened to the Lutino Macaws?

Thank Your Greycloud for the update. For those who think the lutinos are a little bland, how about this variation

Those colors are amazing. It's like an opposite version of a B&G. They should call it a "Gold and Blue Macaw"

Re: What Happened to the Lutino Macaws?

These birds are very interesting. But like Bobby mentioned, I don't care for the big red eyes so much.

The second variation, now that's cool. What a beautiful bird.

Re: What Happened to the Lutino Macaws?

That yellow macaw is really a variation of a Blue & Gold. I have a friend here in Jacksonville who raises macaws and recently came up with a similar chick, though not quite that pretty. I have seen some variation to the Scarlet Macaws as I have one. The Scarlets from Mexico have noticeably less yellow on the wings. The ones in South America have a big green spot on the back of the head. Also I have seen other Scarlets with much more dark green on the tips of the yellow feathers; some feathers almost entirely dark green. Here is a back shot of Clifford from a couple of years ago.

Re: What Happened to the Lutino Macaws?

Also Bobby I have a story for you. My friend who raises macaws now has 109 birds. He had about 50 and then someone in Ohio was retiring and moving south who had a large aviary. He could not build the necessary facility quickly enough before this past winter so he had to wait until spring until the birds could be safely shipped in the Semi. In this collection David got was a breeding pair of blue-throats. Unfortunately they dropped an egg durring transport. I need to visit him again to see if the blue-throats laid any more eggs. I had never been in the presence of a blue-throat before and was surprised to see they are a little smaller than a B&G, but pictures do not do the birds justice when you see the color of the throat. They really are pretty!
