This post may be "slightly" touched by MBS. But I have been driving the birds crazy lately because I find I want to interact with them when a lot of the time they are self-entertainers and don't really want that much to do with me. Yes, we have good moments together every day but they definitely get fed up with me after awhile! I'm home a lot more lately and you can tell I get on their nerves a little. Obviously I respect their space when they don't want attention. :p

Over the past month or so I've brought up the idea of wanting a more clingy/velcro bird to Dillan (my fiance). We live in an apartment and can't make too much noise or commit a huge amount of space to another bird so that automatically rules out my dream of owning a large macaw for now. I've had my heart set on a Hahn's macaw though and I have a few questions I can't seem to find straight answers for.

Our apartment is an ancient building and while sound carries out the door, it does not transfer through the walls much at all. Most neighbors are unaware we own huskies (and they can be LOUD) let alone parrots unless they meet them. Greenleaf is a relatively quiet amazon and I have no issues whatsoever with her noise level. Eva has her moments where her screeches are very high-pitched, but this only happens a few times a day and it's not bad at all.

But before I make the decision and potentially start looking for a Hahn's macaw breeder, how do you feel about the idea of a Hahn's macaw in our situation? I know I have the time, patience, money, space, etc. for one and am excited about the idea so that's not my concern, I just want to be a good neighbor and make sure this bird will work in our household. I know I have other options (Poicephalus species, smaller Amazons, other conures except suns, caiques, lories, greys, etc. etc. would all be no issue in terms of noise level) but I am specifically in love with macaws.

We are heading to Austin for the weekend and will be around some baby parrots so I really want to get some advice before we are possibly faced with cute parrot temptation! Thanks in advance all.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Not much at all, if I remember correctly. It's been 15 years or so since I've fostered, or worked with them...

Again, this is very much an individual bird thing.

I guess this question is irrelevant now. I love the idea of a Hahn's and they were up there on our small list of parrot species we want in the future...

I made contact with an Austin Hahn's macaw breeder and the local bird store and neither had any parrots available. (Parrot specialty store completely devoid of parrots? What a bummer :( At least we can get some new toys and meet their resident birds.) Then... I had the opportunity to put a deposit on the other species we have been heavily considering for awhile and while I was deciding, one of the two available already sold so I had to be quick. These birds were posted today and sold in hours! Crazy. We knew we wanted a baby, whatever species we picked, and this will be the first bird we have a truly clean slate with. The breeder left a great impression with me and I couldn't resist so... in late March or early April our baby African grey will be coming home! She's just a little two week old ball of fluff right now but I don't know how we are going to wait that long!!

Yay!!! Congrats! I've been hunting for a blue crown or a Hahns macaw for a while and it's a Struggle! I'm definitely in love with a Velcro personality lol from my research most greys aren't as physically "needy" as macaws and conures so I've shied away from the species. But they are sooooo smart congrats on your new little fluff ball! Pics are mandatory here btw!!

Thanks :) We're not expecting a "velcro" bird in the same way as a Hahn's, but this little one will definitely need a lot of attention and we plan on spending a lot of time on training and socializing. I have some adorable pictures of her with her sister I'll have to post when I get back from Austin. Maybe some of the hopefully not-too-crazy toy haul we get from the bird store too ;)
