A few months ago i needed advice about a neglected macaw my neighbor was keeping on his back porch. Since then i have had permission to do as i please with the bird. I have cleaned up the floor..which was covered in at least a foot of fecal matter and old seed..and a few dead critters. He now has toys and fresh food and water every day. I even winterized the cage..buying heaters. All this is with my own money. Today while playing with gabby..who is approx 25years old but left outside for 20years..he laughed..alot...like me .i told the owner i want him soo bad.he never responded. Heres some pix.i have alot of work to do with this bird who is not mine, but i feel like im doing something good and its worth it.

What a wonderful thing you are doing for Gabby! I bet he is ecstatic to have the new lease on life you have given him. Bless you for changing his life.
I hope that they end up just letting you bring him home with you.

He's in really good feather. For a macaw that's being neglected, he appears to be in great shape.

Thanks..I put a towel over him a few weeks ago and got the pins that were on his tail..they were there awhile. Today, after we had a laugh..he took an apricot from my hand. Baby steps and he does seem to be in good health..I've been feeding him for a few months...I say neglected because he has no interaction.. I still have my sissy at home...which has entered her terrible twos...I cut her wings down yesterday..seemed to help with the attitude..lol

What a lovely bird. Thank you so much for making his life better. It's heartwarming to know he has such a good friend in you. It's just baffling how someone could neglect a creature like that and how that doesn't qualify as neglect worth local authorities involvement. I hope you took before and after pictures of what you corrected. Perhaps his owner will have a change of heart and allow you to adopt the bird someday. I will keep hoping that happens.

As an aside, isn't it amazing how an animal living in such dismal conditions can be fully feathered like that? You'd think that would drive an animal to self destruct. Birds are complicated and amazing.

Gabby is a real beauty, he looks very healthy considering his situation, but physical appearance can be deceiving. Maria, I'm really glad Gabby's owner is allowing you to improve this poor bird's living conditions, I hope he will eventually decide to do what's best for the bird. For the time being, I'm sure hearing Gabby laugh and knowing you've improved his life in so many ways is very rewarding.

Very heartwarming. Great job. I wish he would let you adopt him. Or maybe he will realize what a joy Gabbie can be and start interacting with him more. Save Gabbie and the owner :)

As some of you know I do not own gabby. I should. My fiancé went out spent more money, but built gabby a nice enclosure around his original cage. Seems like every day I visit, the heater is off,no water,no fresh food...or just the opposite...tons of food, with rotting fruit becuz the owner is gone. The owner owns a construction company, so gabby is somewhere in the middle of the grounds. Close enough to the fire pit where random people burn rubber and plastic and fireworks. Recently gabby isn't the same bird. His eyes look droopy, feathers dull, poop runny and not colored right. He's showing signs of depression, maybe metal poisoning, and neurological problems from being left alone. All my opinion...I'm not a vet. Gabby doesn't talk anymore, doesn't play, and climbs under the cage...a lot to sit. I just lost my job..the bar closed down I worked at. I've told the owner to please take him to the vet. No response.i just don't have the funds.i have a go fund me account but that's for the vet bills for the kittens I rescue a few month ago and for doolies vet bill I'm still paying on. The owner tells me sometime the secretary who lives 40 min away tAkes good care of gabby when no one is around...lies. No one has been around the bird for five days, but me and I'm not allowed to take him home. I can report the owner. Or I can sit back and watch my baby fade away. I need advice. I need help!! I'm tired of crying every time I have to leave gabby.

What a handsome boy he is! My heart is aching after reading this :31: I just DO NOT understand people at times. The owner is probably thinking " gabby is pulling at her heart strings, and she is taking care of him..all good for ME!" Selfish bas**** ( sorry monitors! :51:)

You are now emotionally attached to Gabby..as he is to you now. Probably can't wait for you to come by and give him love and attention.

If you report him,he'll know who did it I'm sure, which would no doubtedly end any chance you have with rescuing the poor creature.

I have no advice..i'm sorry..and am sorry for your personal situation also.
Please keep us posted.

Jim

The owner would totally know. The secretary is just like the owner of gabby...Oooh look a pretty bird. I was just asked to take on a goffin....by the owner of gabby. What the ...heck!!!! I am emotionally attached to gabby, I think more than I ever knew. I could never afford another bird but I would sell my stuff for animals. In fact I'm calling the credit cards right now to see how much I can spend on this beautiful boy lol. I'll just take the bus to interviews...my car broke down as well.....merry flipping Christmas. Thanks Jim....I appreciate you in my time of need.

Well, you probably should report him. Get that bird out of a terrible situation.

Heck, go to a news outlet. They love these sob storries. You won't make friends with the neighbor but meh...

What would he do if you just took the bird to your house for a bit? Would he even notice? Would he care?

Some people get a real buzz out of not giving in even if they know they should, the more you want the more stubborn they become. How about ultimatum time you give me him and no further call on you or I report that this bird is neglected? The bird and it's welfare is the most important thing. Be aware that you may get him and he may not make it after such a bad time. Some people should be ........ IMO.

PS I know things are not easy for you right now and sincerely hope that changes like now. Thank you for doing what you can.

So can you talk to the secretary? Sounds like maybe that's your in with him. He doesn't give a crap about what you think but maybe she does?

Maybe between you and her she can help you save him?

Jbassett..thanks I'll try that
Plumsmum...I know it could happen.
Doolie passed after a multitude of strokes...course I didn't know they were strokes he was having. Healthy lifestyle was to much for my yellow nape ..his heart was under developed due to bad life so it breaks my heart when I see gabby...
