Hey there,

Haven't posted in a while. Today was a hard day, and it lifted my spirits to look at videos of my kids.

I'm just feeling a bit angry at humans today. In Florida Macaws are everywhere, but today was crazy!.

Went to a new restaurant for lunch, we were seaten in the outdoor section, and several Macaws were part of the "decor". I watched patrons, shove forks full of food through the cage bars, and kids banging the cages for 30 min before I lost my temper and asked for a manager.

Next, I stopped at a bloody gas station, and they had a plucked macaw in a tiny cage. Finally, I went to a garden nursery and found half a dozen neglected macaws in filthy rusted cages spread about the grounds.

Just so heartbreaking to see these intelligent creatures toutured, or left neglected and ignored

I'd be taking videos and reporting some people... that's just... I can understand your anger. I'll just leave it at that. I get mad when I see conure's in finch cages and petco bird raising. Stuff like that would infuriate me.

Two green cheek conures, one sun conure, and two quakers.
That's so sad; I'd be angry, too. I'm glad you asked for a manager. Did he/she seem to care? I, too, hate seeing the birds in Petco. I mean, how would a person like living in a tiny room where they could barely move. It breaks my heart.

Not much, until I reminded her that the restaurant owner had likely paid $$ for them and would be angry if they were harmed, not to mention the risk of a law suit if one of the kids loose a finger.

Yeah, it helps when a lawsuit is mentioned. Irritates me when people are ignorant about things like that.

None. My wife has one too many. Kidding!
Maybe use can be made of animal cruelty laws... is there any venue for reporting? Maybe consult the D.A. or Humane Society?
Locally, a bar/grill chain was reported to media for abuse of mascot iguanas... it hit the news and the chain hired consultants and refurbished the displays/enclosures.
Thanks for speaking up.

Ohh I just hate when animals in general are used and/or abused.

I got my B&G macaw from a pet store where he was screaming his head off and attacking anything coming even remotely close to the cage.

I was told he was a 3 year old female. After some detective work and a DNA test, I found out he was 10 years older and a different sex. One of the phrases he knew was "why are you biting?"

I some time after I bought Sugar, went back to visit the pet store (before I found out I had been cheated) where he was able to step up on all of the employees. They were all really scared of Sugar to start with, as they had all been severely bitten by him.

They sold me Sugar as "not tame" as no one could get close to him without being bitten, but I could not leave him in that situation. His eyes was pleading with me and he came to the cage bars and gently licked my fingers.

Today Sugar is a loving bird, who loves cuddles and slowly gets to trust strangers more and more :)

It just goes to show the difference between being in a cage in a stressful environment and a loving home.

I would probably ask to buy all the birds in your area to free them from that life

You get 2 photos of yesterdays picnic, where Sugar met the boy Selius for the first time. Sugar on his own accord went up to a stranger and allowed him to pet him (BIG step for Sugar)

That's a great story, silleIN, I'm sure Sugar is sooo glad that you chose him! Was the pet store a national chain? I'm just wondering, did they say he was DNA sexed? Love the pictures! Thanks for sharing!

To the OP, sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and bear it. Oddly I see a lot of caged birds in Hong Kong restaurants, sometimes in most deplorable conditions.

Well I sort of feel he chose me, as he wouldn't voluntarily come close to anyone and he came from the other side of the cage to me and gently licked my fingers through the cage bars :)

No it's not a national chain (and I live in Denmark). Yes I was told he had been dna sexed, but the papers had been lost.

Making some phone calls to the managers and animal authorities may snap them into shape.

There is always the option of just taking pictures and dropping them off at a news station. Animal Cruelty coverage is worth lots of media attention, and may just give those birds a new life if they are seized and/or the owners finally realize and pay attention.

This is a great idea. Improper care and mistreatment of animals is shameful. No one wants their name or business in the media for that.

I hear ya. There used to be a little mall on Sanibel island that used macaws as outdoor decorations. It used to drive me crazy. I refused to shop there.
