So we took Cookie to the vet yesterday. She was in desperate need of some grooming and a well bird visit. Overall, except for the plucking, he said she looks really good. He was actually surprised that being a plucker, her weight and build is as good as it is. She has really good muscle tone over her chest, and is pretty much a perfect weight for her build. He doesn't have high hopes for her ever growing the plucked areas back in, he thinks there is too much damage, but only time will tell for sure. Whether she does or not, I love her anyway, I'm not looking for a decoration.

Even though I am just fostering her right now, the vet said that I should keep her. He said she is obviously bonded to me already, and some things are just meant to be. I was actually pretty surprised to hear him say he doesn't think scarlets generally make good pets due to their plucking issues and nippiness. He said with as many plucked scarlets as he sees, he just doesn't think they are very suited for captivity.

I'm just glad she was given a clean bill of health, and that her beak and toes were groomed. It's not really very surprising that they had to be done, considering she has had no toys or anything to help keep her groomed in years. Hopefully now that I've got her eating pellets instead of the junk seed she was on and starting to play with toys, the grooming won't really be a future issue.

Thank you, OS, for doing all that for Cookie, AND for sharing it.
Wonderful story all around.
