Nala a B&G Macaw 6 Years Old
Hello All
We recently adopted a 6 year old Blue & Gold Macaw, that was in need of a new home. Iā€™m not new to Macaws but I have been away for a while, as my last B&G stayed with my ex wife and daughters due to the close bond.

I took our new girl to the vet today for a check up and trim and all is good.

So hereā€™s my question, we purchased her a nice new large cage that will be in the main living area, however Iā€™m up late sometimes and I donā€™t want to keep her awake, so we are looking to purchase a sleep cage to put in the spare bedroom. What size cage would work for just a sleep cage? I donā€™t want to put her in something too small, but we donā€™t need a jumbo one either. How much room do they really need at night?

Thanks
Mark

Would this cage work just for sleeping in another room at night? The center grate would have to be removed. During the day she would be out or in her large cage in the living room.
I was told that the dimensions are 40 high 31 wide and 20 deep

Please see link below.

LARGE BIRD CAGE.

Thanks
Mark

Hi,
I am sure some more experienced mac-ers will chime in, but from what I see, your little girl will destroy that cage on a whim!

Yea, I wouldn't trust that cage for a macaw. Don't think it has a chance with a macaws beak.

What kinda cage is that? I'd use it for my sugar gliders...not a macaw. What about putting a dark blanket over the cage while your up? And keep looking for a better cage or you'll be throwing away your money.

I debated a sleep cage for my mac. But decided that in the end it wasn't worth it. He's just too big to really justify two cages for him (I have a smallish house). The cost wasn't worth it so I just put a blanket over his single cage and call it good.

He seems to be just fine with that arrangement. Sometimes he'll get huffy about bed time (just like a toddler) but within a few minutes he quiets down and doesn't mind the noise I make being up and about watching movies and such.

It's probably the only thing he's done that's been easy!

Mark, I think you'll be amazed at how well parrots adapt to human routines. It sounds like your B&G will spend a lot of time out of his cage, I see no harm in his day time cage being his sleep cage as well. I think a nice comfortable perch for him to sleep on in his regular cage would be fine. Parrots appreciate bedtime rituals more than absolute silence. I cover my birds' cages and dim the lights, that is the signal for bedtime and I seldom hear anything other than beak grinding after that. My cockatoo demands a good night song or several then she runs to her swing for the night. Covering cages isn't really necessary, I do it more out of habit and it does seem to comfort them but that's an individual's choice, what works for you and your bird.

Does your B&G have a name?

Thanks for all the great information. We have her sleep cage all set up and she should be sleeping in there tonight.

BTW her name is Nala
