Scarlet macaw wing fluttering and squawking on edge of cage

Hi i am new to this site. I have scarlet macaw and she is 6 years old. When she is out of her cage she stands on the edge and sqwaks a little and also flutters her wings a little. When i try to pick her up figuring maybe thats what she wants she runs to the other side of her cage. I have had her 3 weeks now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated . Thanks

From what you describe, she may simply be trying to build up her courage to fly. It's possible she's considering going to you, but if she is still running from you she may not yet be comfortable enough to let down her guard.

If she si extremely skittish around her, you may want to start off slowly. Sit by her cage and read to her. And bribe her with treats she especially enjoys. Stuff you don't give as part of her regular meal that she enjoys very much. The point here is to get her used to your presence while feeling safe and unthreatened... and even coming to associate you with tasty treats and such.

Once she's at the point where you can approach without totally freaking her out (which might take a while, depending on the bird), you can try target training.
