I just purchased a 2 yr old macaw, I am wanting to build a perch
I have plenty of cedar but was I formed that cedar is toxic to parrots, and macaws. I also have acess to a black walnut tree a d elm trees are these trees toxic as I am going to leave the bark on for the occupy aspect? Also is there a place that gives me ideas of to us to build as I am a woodworker and have scraps that I can throw toys together at the same time
Thank you for your response in advance.

Hey! I've been using pinterest to get ideas, there are TONS. Lots of cool hanging branch playgyms. Good luck and post lots of pictures! :) What kind of macaw is it?

Gary, I noticed you are in Texas, so am I. My absolute favorite natural wood for perches, stands or habitats is crepe myrtle, it's easy to work with and tough enough to stand up to bigger beaks.

I now have a young Hahn's macaw. I used to have a Pacific Parrotlet that lived until almost 15. Before that I had a budgie.
I'm a new macaw owner, too, but of the smaller Hahn's macaw variety. Please do be extra careful to keep your new bird safe.

Nice to meet you. Walnut is full of tannins...I think elm is safe (check the list) and it's such a tough wood that it might make a good chew-resistant perch. Bark can be problematic...it's fun to chew, but probably full of wild yeasts, asper, assorted bacteria as well as bugs that might move in with you. You can disinfect with heat. Bleach is good for cleanup but be sure to wash it off and let any residue evaporate completely. If you are building toys, be sure to use only stainless steel and no other metal.
