I'll keep everyone up to date with Kalani through this thread. It's about time, thanks to some encouragement from Wrench and other members.

Kalani is going on two years old. He has an indoor aviary.

Right now, he is doing a good job of learning to fly to me on command (but also a good job of flying to me when NOT commanded).

Kalani, you are so handsome!! I just love his intense coloring, especially that turquoise. Greenwings are just so regal looking. I have such a soft spot for big macs like him!

Thanks everyone! I wish I had better quality pictures! The lighting/camera is doing something funky to his wings in that second picture.

Maybe some better lighting would help.. agh need to get back to harness training.

Oh man, It's not. It has been inconsistent to say the least. A few months ago, we got it on together pretty easily. Unfortunately, OFF was a whole other story. When it was part way on and part way off, he got nervous and that got him a bit tangled. Had a heck of a time getting it completely off. I'm sure it was a little traumatizing for him. Either way, we are starting from scratch.

Kalani supervising Loki's cage being assembled in the background. He is unsure about the notion of having a neighbor.

Hi Don. SO if your going back to square one on the harness, can I suggest that you practice Just getting Kalani to put his head thru the head loop, ("ON") and once he does that, just drape the harness over his body/wings and then give the off command ("OFF") so he learns to take it off. Do you treat with his training? I usualy have to bribe' Salty to put his head thru the head loop. Once its draped over his body/wings, I ask him to walk around a bit so he gets used to the feel of it on him.

That's good advice. Hopefully that will allow him to know what's coming next. Treats are definitely always part of the process.
I think the biggest problem was that Kalani was still in "baby mode" so he was pretty willing to let it go on without too much push back. This resulted in less repetition of "steps" of the process, so it was overwhelming. Totally my fault. This go around, we'll do each part dozens of times before moving on.

Such a handsome boy you have there Don. I always had a thing for Mac's myself.
An old G.F. has a B&G. "Kasey" was VERY intimidating when I first met him..I dunno...something about that beaky .
But...when he climbed down my arm,to my lap, then proceded to ROLL OVER on his back,to have his belly rubbed and tickled..well...that was it for me!:)

Thanks Jim. I gotta say the macaw beak is intimidating at first, but between the bites I've gotten from Kalani and some of the more mature macaws at the sanctuary, they are far from the worst I've personally gotten. There's a lot of potential for damage there, but I think typically they know not to use too much force. Plus I prefer the "crushing" bite than the "piercing" bite. I've gotten far worse from cockatoos and even greys thus far.
Regardless they still demand a lot of respect!

Oh, he's lovely! He's still got that goofy baby look about him at 2. That really puts his lifespan into perspective, of course he still looks like a baby with decades and decades of life in front of him!

Can't wait to see more!

How is he feeling about his new neighbour now?

We still have a long road ahead, God willing!

Thanks Terry!
The two of them have just started to be introduced. Loki is not in the "bird room" yet, but now his cage is in the same main room, where Kalani's stand is. Kalani is pretty indifferent so far. He will occasionally fly over to Loki's cage, but he is interested in the toys, not Loki.

If nothing else, it seems like they'll definitely both be able to be out in the same area without too much controversy.

That is always such a relief! It's so nice when you don't have to worry about one being actively aggressive towards another. Our big bird room is like that, some like each other, the ones they don't they just ignore. Now the small bird room is another story. The Sun and Jenday can't be out when the tiels are, and I have to be in the room constantly when the Blue throated conures are out as they want to bother everyone.

I know Loki was around birds at his last "home," but it wasn't a long time. I have no idea if he was around birds in the home before that.
I think it helps that Kalani is so young. He is pretty adaptable with change and new items.
