Hello every will get right to point,i I am owned by a umbrella cockatoo, citron cockatoo, pine apple conure ,and a quacker parrot, the two cockatoo were rescues from very bad situations, the citron we have had 8 yrs ,not a very friendly bird because of past ??but he not going any where ,he has his nice moments :) umbrella is female we have had about six months ,she is so adorable she is aprox 25 yrs old,we know a female couple who wants us to take there b@g macaw ,the owner is having some really bad health issues, that I wont go into, but they cant take care of her like she should be,they are the second set of owners, bird has been to vet has a clean bill of health,we plan on going over a few times to visit before we take ownership to get bird use to seeing us and giving it treats. She says the bird is really a sweet bird after her egg laying phase.i under stand it WILL take time ,it took our citron over a year before he would even step up to us but he still un sure of anybody, like I said he not going anywhere again to another home couldn't do that to him after the progress he has had.SO here are some issues I have, appriciate any and all input, like I said we are going to make a few visits before (if we do take her)wife definitely wants her ,so I may lose this battle :D wont be first and wont be last.So here are some of concerns I have, other than her diet

1.She is NOT banded, should I assume she is wild caught????
2.She is A EGG Layer,i lost a beloved cockatiel due to egg bound:(
3.She does seem a little skittish ,the owner said shes not like that when not ready to lay egg,i have seen the bird on her shoulders in picture(that bird will never be on my shoulder)
4.She is on a pellet diet(roudy bush,,plus a few fruits)
5.WILL she continue to be an egg layer???
6.Not sure of birds age, currant owners have had her 5-6 years but cant remember how long the original couple had her, they are guessing she might be in her teens

Sorry for long post

Thanks Bill

First of all it’s so wonderful of you to consider giving this B&G a loving home!! You obviously have tons of bird experience so you’ll be wonderful at helping her settle in. Patience patience patience, right?

Both my Macaws are not banded and were not wild caught, I’m not sure why?? Great question though!!

I would definitely add veggies, shelled raw nuts (no peanuts because of the chance of mold), I also give mine some grains and sprouts. There’s a ton of great info on Macaw diets out there

I have no idea on the egg laying, I’m sorry! That would be a great question for an Avian Vet.
I do know that extra calcium is needed- you can feed them an egg with the shell crushed but unsure how often. I only give my MACs 1/2 egg 2x a week

I thought I’d also mention if she’s a shoulder bird, you’ll have to physically discourage her from going on your shoulder. I didn’t let mine on my shoulder until there was enough trust built up. When they’d start climbing, I would take my other hand to either block them or have them step up. Believe me, they’ll never stop trying! [emoji23]

Good luck, keep us updated [emoji106]
