Jacks over bonded to me

Hello everyone,

When I first purchased Jack, he was the sweetest nicest well socialized bird you could imagine. He loved everyone and just wanted to be around people. My girlfriend does not like animals, she takes no interest in Jack and so he spends all his time with me.

Yesterday I had some friends over and they wanted to hold Jack. Once my friend was holding Jack it looked like he was attempting to bite her. I did not want to take the chance of him biting her so I removed him from her immediately. We had a couple of laughs and called him a bad boy.

She decided that she would like to try again and the same thing happened. This time it wasn't Jack that made me mad it was my friend. She hit my bird! I was so pissed I told her never to do it again. This surprised me that she would do this. She owns an African grey. This bird does not recieve the lifestyle that I provide for Jack. Jack is spoiled to most, but properly cared for in my opinion. He is with me as I am writing this post preening my hair.

Without having new people around him all the time, is there a way to get him better socialized to new things/people. Would letting him watch TV and letting him beak the different people help at all?

I work from home a lot and he spends a lot of time with me.

Cal gets so******ed from inside the cage. Many people see her daily and there are two people she will allow fingers into her cage. She then stands on said fingers lol.

It took weeks and a lot of supervision. I think Jack was probably overwhelmed at suddenly being handed to someone he didn't know. You can never predict the way people will act unfortunately. Or other animals for that matter which is why although my dogs are the softest fluff balls on the planet, Cal will never be out of her cage in their presence.

Chalk it up to experience and be safe in the knowledge it won't happen again.

As you can tell I have a grey and they are noted to be a one person bird. There is only me in a small apt. and a kitty. I have made a point of taking her with me when I go places, rides in the car and best is at my bird club. Each member of the club helps socialize the birds. It worked! Rosie is friendly to people and will step up for them with no biting.

Social/Intellectual Needs of Parrots

Thanks! I will have to look for a bird club near me. I have not heard of any in Cambridge Ontario.

I've worried about how overbonded Pepper is and how that might have some consequences further down the road. I try to take her to all the family functions that I can just so she gets some face time with other people. She has warmed up to my roommate lately and will even fly over to him but I think the food bribes are to thank for that.
