Today is The Day

To those of you with macaws, today is the great and wonderful day you can get almonds in the shell dirt cheap.... this is my technique; My 3 macaws like almonds in the shell best of all their nut foods. Oddly I can buy shelled almonds but my boys really want to open the shells themselves and I find they are only available around Christmastime. Wal-Mart sells nuts in the shell in bulk at $3.98 a pound for the holidays. People pick the walnuts, pecans and most filberts out of the mix, leaving the almonds behind. Now after the 1st of the year, I go to the Wal-Marts and offer to take ALL the leftover nuts for $1. a pound. Here is how it's done. Put pictures of your macaws in your wallet. Check out the bulk nut display and ask to see the produce manager. You must go during the day as the produce manager you will need to see usually is not there at night. Explain that you have macaws and that you can only find them around this time of year and that you will buy ALL the bulk nuts in the display. At $1. a pound, this will be between 40-80 lbs in most stores. I keep them all year in the birdroom refrigerator. Of the 4 Wal-Mart stores I visited today, one sold me 39 lbs and one 63. One had a hard-nose manager that wouldn't budge off $3. in negotiations and one was not ready to sell yet. The $63 dollar store invited me to come back next year as he said THEY WOULD NORMALLY THROW THE LEFTOVERS AWAY AND DECLARE A LOSS. That is why they would be willing to do this for a buck a pound....
