I was just willed an 11 year old female Blue and Gold. She has a cage, but I think it is a little small for her. In your opinion what is the best size, brand and model for caging for her? TIA
The general rule of thumb is to buy as big a cage as you have room for and can afford. With a Big Mac, you may want to consider stainless if it's in your budget. If stainless is too pricey, King's Cages has an excellent reputation for making some of the highest-quality powder coat cages on the market. If you're on a tighter budget, bircages4less.com has a great selection. Our amazons cage is from them. Very well made and affordable.
The Maui mansion is the size up from the cage we have (poipu palace) which is oversized for our birds species. Knowing how ginormous our cage is, I think the next size up would likely be a suitable size for a macaw. There are plenty of much, much larger ones available as well!
My favorite cages all have full height front doors! This one features is one of my must haves. It greatly easies moving the Parrot in and out and everything else including cleaning.
If she can't spread out her wings completely without them touching the sides of the cage, it is too small. Go with the biggest one you can afford. There are members here with huge indoor aviaries for their macs, and there are those who get more standard cages for macs. I also will second the King's cages and birdcages4less site!!
This is super expensive, but I was extremely happy with everything about it with my macaw. I probably wouldn't have spent this much on my own, but the cage came with her, so that's what she had.
