After a long day of spreadsheets and paperwork spiced up with a few hour’s power outage, it was time to unspool on the porch with an icy beverage. Gus didn’t want to go but he wanted a ride to poop. Then he wanted to bite. Then he wanted to go back to the cage. I looked at him and reminded myself that I don’t need anything from him, and he doesn’t need anything from me. We are equal in freedom. Glory be, he stepped up and let me take him to the screen porch. It was heavenly - warm, birds singing, fresh green leaves. Gus spontaneously walked over to my knee. Looked at my hand and bent his head is if he might pick it up to make me pet him, then made the bite face. Looked, bent, bite face. If I moved my hand toward him, bite face. But I don’t need him to do anything. He doesn’t need me. We are equal and independent and we each have the exact same number of selves. I acceot who is is where he is.

And then I touched his back, and he tensed, and softened, and bent his neck for me to scratch. It’s been nearly a year since he let me do that. For half an hour the world was perfect. Warm quiet air, green leaves, lazy birdsong, macaw with closed eyes turning his chin up for scratches. I know it’s just temporary until the man he loves most returns and I don’t care. A momentary miracle? Hands cupped under this fleeting perfect instant, knowing I can’t keep any of it for myself, yes please, thank you.

Beautiful.
Yep, it's a gift...
THE PRESENT!
I'll remember that more often, I do hope.

If you cannot be with the one you Love.
Love the one you are with.

Even if it is just for a half an hour.

That's me, the one he's with. I'll take it.

These evening he called, the come-get-me-now call. But he wouldn't step off onto the poop perch, he was looking in the next room. I thought oh, he's looking for the beloved one. So we walked into every room and looked for him. Back to the cage, he wouldn't go back. He was staring out the patio door. Do you want to go outside? Open the door. Sit in the chair. Gus runs to my lap and bends his head down. He's got pinfeathers going on. He let me scratch for maybe ten minutes, then got nervous at the woodpeckers and distant shotgun sounds and wanted to go back. Aaaand, now I can't breathe for the rest of the evening because I'm allergic to him. Maybe I can get shots?

I know, it's just for a few days. I'll have company this Friday, they will go home Sunday, and his sweetheart will be home, and it will be all over for our not-quite-love story.

Great story K!

It's suppose to be sunny and in the 80's tomorrow...first REAL nice day this season. Tonight during dinner,I made Amy a promise...to put his 'Salty Perch" that Al and Salty so graciously donated to Amy,when they came up to visit us a couple summers ago.
Amy loves the perch! It's high enough so he can get a great view out the window ( even though he STILL thinks sitting on my shoulder, looking out,is better!)

As 'Boats stated.." If you can't be with the one you love, then love the one your with!" ( Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young!)

And...WTG Gusey!! :D

Just seeing this thread. I LOVED your opening post! A half hour of heaven, indeed!

As for your allergy, do preemptive doses of 24 hour allergy pills help?

As soon as spring starts, I'm on a 24 hour OTC med all summer. Allergies are terrible in this part of the country. But no pill is a match for Dandy Gus and his Deadly Dander. Which reminds me ... are the words "dander", "dangle" and "dandy" connected? What about "danger"? Must go look this up. I could see the root being "to fall" as in dandruff falls, geegaws dangle from dandies, and heavy falling things are dangerous.
