How many people have Illiger's Macaws?

Hi Everyone,

A few years ago I became the owner of a rescued 17 year old Illiger's Macaw (Blue Winged Macaw). At the time I did not know that this species was a rare well at least from what I was told by my local parrot shop. I have done some research, and seem to find the same not much about them except a few sites. He is a joy to have and has bonded to me very well and we have fixed most of his behavioral issues such as screaming, though he is free to scream now and then. I created this thread just to get an idea of how many people out there, well at least on this site have an Illiger's macaw and if you are in the Philadelphia area we can have a play date.

Thank You

Hello and welcome. They aren’t terribly rare, and we do have the odd poster come and go who owns one but to the best of my recollection we don’t have any active posters owned by an Illiger. I was debating between this and an Ekkie. Ekkie won out but I’m a big fan of this species. Hint: we’re big fans of many pictures here :)

Sunny a female B&G macaw;
Japie (m) & Appie (f), both are congo african grey;
All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
LOL, I love your typo ;)

I see a few of them appearing on the rehoming-lists every year (mostly because of screaming / too loud for the house-issues).
The latest one had some weird beakissues that the current owners never even bothered to fix... so I was very tempted (living near the university clinic gives me more options than most people have).

Well done- you got the screaming down to managable outbursts.
\o/
I always hear they are large macaws (with all the attitudes etc.) in a small package, they are wicked smart and very trainable. (and very loud when not raised right)

I've not owned one, but we've had several Illeger's come through the Rescue I volunteer at over the years. I don't think that they're at all "rare", they just aren't the most-popular of the smaller Macaws. I see a ton of Hahn's Macaws come through (and they are also adopted lightening fast), but we've had a good number of Illeger's over the years, definitely more Illeger's than Severe's...

We got 2 pairs of Illiger's macaws this year, I adore them! Except for when they were on eggs and protective, they are really easy to live with. Mine aren't screamers, love their food an playful. Their size is great for me and they are pretty in a more, muted way. Getting ready to build some outdoor flights next year, and can't wait to really see them SHINE :)

I was torn between an Illigers or an Alexandrine, I can't remember what made me think an Alex would be better for me, it might have the been the big macaw personality because I haven't had a macaw previously and wondered if it would be a bit full on. Also they were hard to find here (UK), I don't think I found any breeders at all and I've still never seen one in real life, even at 'bird fair' type places.

I did find a series of videos on YouTube that I avidly watched with a female Illigers in it.

Hear Hear for the rare parrot owners on the forum. We venture onto unknown territory, bravely commit to a species of parrot with only the written word ( and not much of that) to guide us. We find a specieis to be utterly cute, beautiful and or unique, and take the plunge. I don;y think I;ve read here about a unique species being adopted , young or old, that has had a bad outcome. Bravo for we outliers!

ps There has been 1 (ONE) other member in 5 years with another yellow shoulder Amazon. Any they seem to have fallen off the earth ( even after poking a few times).

I love Illgers Macaws BTW, and they were on our short list 5 years ago. Bravo for your choice. More pics please!.
