Go to the Macaw sub forum, and read every last thing posted by birdman666. The man must have been a macaw in a former life.

Re: Green wing macaw

I had a Green Wing and B&G, found the former more sociable and gentle. But that is a small sampling! Definitely head over to the Macaw forum as "wrench13" suggested. So much wonderful info available.

Re: Green wing macaw

As previous members have suggested, head over to the Macaw sub form and read as much as you can. While green wings are known as gentle giants, that is a generalization. So while you may be more apt to find gentle green wings, it does not mean that every green one will be more gentle then any other Macaw. For example, I just met two green wings that are only able to be handled by their person. Recently I met several blue and gold that could be handled by anybody. This despite the fact that green wings are known to be more gentle and social than Blue and gold. If your heart is set on a Greenwing macaw I think they are a great choice. However finding a gentle one will come down to you actually finding a gentle one rather than choosing a Greenwing “because it gentle .” Not sure if I make sense with that last sentence but I guess what I’m trying to say is keep interacting with greenwings until you find one that you fall in love with and that falls in love with you and then you’ll probably have the right Bird. Forgive me for any spelling or grammar medical errors since I typed this using Siri on my iPhone.

Re: Green wing macaw

The main thing to know is these animals are a life long dedication that can live to be 70. So be prepared to live with a "2 year old" for probably the rest of your life. I have a B&G and I gotta say, macaws are very marvelous animals. Not one day has passed where he hasn't made me laugh, he sure is a good therapy pet. Just keep in mind, these parrots need a lot of attention so if you're ready for that responsibility then I say a green wing macaw is a great choice.

Nope. Just addicted to them in this life.

Big goofy playful lap birds IF their attention needs are met, and if they are properly bite pressure trained and disciplined.

The biggest thing about ANY big mac, even the big red goofballs is BOUNDARY SETTING. Set the boundaries, and you get a well behaved, good bird who doesn't bite, and steps up... IF YOU DON'T SET THE BOUNDARIES WITH THE BIRD, YOUR BIRD WILL SET BOUNDARIES WITH YOU... Putting the MAC in charge of you, or your house is a recipe for disaster. So you need to be the one in charge.

Macs are one of the most interactive of the bunch, and greenwings are one of the more interactive of the macs. They can and will be velcro birds if you let them.

MACAWS ARE PAIR BOND BIRDS. They can have OVERBONDING ISSUES... They need to be properly socialized around strangers so they at least step up and don't bite. OTHERWISE, if you are the only one who handles the bird YOU MAY BE THE ONLY ONE WHO EVER CAN HANDLE THE BIRD. So THAT ONE is very, very important.

THEY LIKE TO PLAY. ANYONE WHO PLAYS WITH A GREENWING, WILL BE A PLAYMATE (OR A TOY.) THEY LIKE HAVING PLAYMATES...

Re: Green wing macaw

BITE PRESSURE TRAIN NOW... AT THIS AGE... AND BITING WILL NEVER BECOME A PROBLEM. Wait until the bird is more opinionated?! It get exponentially more painful to bite pressure train... just sayin'.... PLAY WITH THIS BIRD. HAVE STRANGERS PLAY WITH THIS BIRD. TEACH THIS BIRD TO LOVE PEOPLE... AND IT WILL...

BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU OTHER THAN, OBVIOUSLY, SET AND MAINTAIN THE BOUNDARIES...
