Egg binding...

Thank god I knew what to look for and caught it early. Could have been fatal!

If I had waited one more day to get her to the vet.... could have been septic!

Don't fool around with this ****... if it's been a day or two and you can see the egg and she isn't passing it, get thee to an avian certified vet!!!

Last night was hard. I was up at 4:00 a.m. and she was trying to pass the egg and I realized she couldn't...

This morning I had stuff due at work, so I ran in, met my deadlines, and then ran home and straight to the vet...

Exactly what I thought it was. Caught it when it first materialized.

For once insomnia paid off...

She's sitting on her other two eggs resting comfortably.

Tomorrow might have been too late... she could have been septic by then.

24 hours. If you see the egg, and it hasn't passed within 24 hours, IT'S A VET EMERGENCY!!!

Don't think, just go.

She hasn't been around any male macaws, so if they hatch it'll be the second coming.... born of the virgin Sweepea... unless you count a toy or two... cuz she's been overly friendly with a couple of her toys just prior too... THIS!

Poor Sweepea. Is this the first time she’s laid eggs? Is it common for female macaws to lay infertile eggs? I always thought that was primarily and issue with smaller birds and not so much bigger species. I’m glad you caught it while treatable and I hope she recovers quickly!

Last year was the first time she ever laid eggs, and she triple clutched.

This was the first batch this year. And hopefully the last.

She is absolutely back to her old sweet self, in fact she's sitting on my shoulder as I type this. It's just a scary thing cuz things can go bad in a hurry when they can't pass an egg.

I am so glad everything came out ok.
I had hoped it was egg bind with Sunny but it ended up being so much worse.

Hope you have a beautiful clutch of babies.

Mark,
Thank you for sharing your wisdom with all of us. Your writings have been most helpful understanding and raising our little girl.
So glad Sweepea is doing well. Thankfully you recognized the danger and got her to the vet in time.

Not fertile. I don't have any male big macs. Only females. Not trying to breed.

She is just at that age now.
