Hi,

I have been planning to get a Scarlet macaw :red1: or a Blue-and-yellow macaw :blue1: for a year now. I have looked into local rescues and long story short no one gives a good pet away most of them are in bad shape so I plan to get one from a reputable breeder. I have looked online and most online stores look very shady and I don't feel comfortable paying $$$$ for live bird where its health and well being matters.

I wanted to check if any of you here knows any reputable breeders on the east coast or around mid-west. I live in Nashville and have looked at local aviary they mostly only breed cockatiel or smaller birds. Also what do you guys think would be a reasonable price for Scarlet macaw or Blue-yellow macaw

Thanks,

Waltee

Hello and Welcome,

Look into Daniel Walther's , he's in Commerce GA. Just so you know in advance he has a waiting list for his birds and from date of deposit your probably looking at a year wait. Dont think you could find a better breeder then Dan. Wonderful person. I've been on his list since January awaiting my Blue and Gold baby. He's got lots of YouTube videos and is on Facebook. Macaw's are his specialty.

Wow! One year wait.. can you share how much he charged for the blue gold chick? I suppose you did extensive research before you chose him did any other decent breeder or pet store stood out that may also be a viable option?
Thanks.

I did about two years of research , we are on opposite coasts and I will be flying out to do some free flight training with him. I've spent hours on the phone , via email and text. His prices just went up a month after I put my deposit in. Most are in it for the money, and dont breed for temperament. Dan is in it for temperament and the birds and is an incredible trainer as well. The temperament of his birds are amazing. I know a year sounds like a long time but it gives you time to get your set up and home ready for your new baby. Its a life long commitment and honestly I wouldn't even consider recommending anyone unless I felt this way about a breeder. Please keep in mind Scarlets can be a bit more difficult than other macaws and if your truly serious about a Scarlet give him a call and discuss the bird. He does breed Scarlets so he will give you a very very good understanding of what you will be looking at . What I will also tell you there is absolutely no pressure with Daniel , he is a wealth of knowledge and willing to help. A real Ambassador to our avian companions. Prices...I don't know what he's asking for his Scarlets but if I was to guess probably in the neighborhood of 2500-3000 . His B/G's are still a great price even after his price increase. Something else to keep in mind is that the price of the bird will be very small in consideration to what you will spend on toys, cage, food , treats over the course of its life. Not to mention many things around the house they WILL get into and they dont mind how much you spent on any of it. To them its the price of you being their pet. Go to his website get his number and give him a call. He has some pricing there but I dont think he advertises the Scarlet pricing.

I just wanted to add that the breeding season or availability changes from year to year and people change their minds, he may have a bird that's ready to go due to various reasons . Its worth the time on the phone if your really ready to make the commitment. Good Luck with your search and I hope you find what your looking for.
