i have had a blue and gold macaw for 21 years, even held him when he was still in his egg and was never sick a day in his life. a week ago he was on top of his cage like normal and suddenly he started squaking and flapping like cazy. i thought at first that his foot was caught on his cage but there was nothing that would have cause that up there. he then flopped off his cage and landed on the floor and flipped on his back. i rushed to him and picked him up and tried to calm him down and within one minute he went limp and was gone. could this had been a heart attack? it all happpened so quick there was nothing i could do,i felt helpless...i was helpless. im so lost and empty inside without him. if anyone could tell me what might have happened i would be forever greatful.

The sudden death of a life partner is heartbreaking...

The 'general' description 'sounds like' Heart Failure, Stroke or a combination. But, the only way to know for sure is to have an Avian Professional complete an examination. Sadly, this would require that you would have placed your baby in a very large ziplock bag and placed him in the refrigerator to preserve the body at point of death.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I have experienced such a loss and there are no answers that will comfort you. It is very important to know, that your sweet baby knew that he was loved and loved you.

Huge, Warm, Amazon Feather Hugs and Prayers your way...

Welcome to the forums. I wish it was under better circumstances for you. I'm so sorry for your loss. Hard to even guess at the cause without lots of background information. Diet, exercise, environment... Ever had blood work to check organ function? Has he been to the vet recently, or at all? They are your best resource for answers. I know it's difficult to think about right now, but you should consider a necropsy for a chance for a definitive cause.

Again, my condolences.

Welcome to the Forums, but I wish it had been under happier circumstances.

Most of us here understand the shock and grief that a sudden loss like this causes, and we join you in your heartbreak. As bitter as this loss is, it does however sound like your baby spent a happy life being loved by you and fortunately did not suffer a long or painful illness as so many do. Having a necropsy performed by a certified avian vet may help to provide some closure for you.

Godspeed on your way to the Rainbow Bridge beautiful one, until we all meet again.

Yeah what a crappy circumstance to join our forums. I really understand how you feel , with the sudden, unexplained death of a companion parrot. It happen to us too, just fine one moment and then almost in the blink of an eye, gone, like a whisper of wind. But you get to keep the memories of all the good times and closeness you had with him, that never dies. Maybe you would like to share some of his life with you to our forum members? I know many will really appreciate it!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for the loss of your beloved macaw. Nothing ever prepares us for such finality, I hope his beautiful memories will in time bring more joy than tears.

The suddenness of passing may suggest cardio or cerebral event. As others have suggested, a necropsy by certified avian vet may give clues.

Thank you for joining, we're always here if you wish to discuss.

Sorry for your loss, new friend.

I cried at work for days when my grey passed from egg binding...a lot younger than 21, too.

It’s gonna take a long time for the hurt to pass, but it will.

I’m sorry you lost your wonderful friend. I’m glad you were with him even tho that’s so hard to go through, it’s better than finding him and always wondering if you could have done something... and you got to hold him and comfort him.

I always worry about Teflon like toxic fumes with sudden death, anything new?

Regardless, it’s so hard to loose them ...they are family
Big hugs

I just want everyone to know how much I appreciate your kind words and concern. All of you helped me out more than you'll ever know. It'a relief to know there are people out there that even though we have never met, make me feel like me and Joe really matter.

I'm new to the "forum" scene so I don't know if you all will see this but I want to thank you all for taking the time to make me feel a little better..

Glad we could help, Kelly. That's why we're here. Many of us have been exactly in your shoes, myself included, so we understand. I'm so glad you found us. Do you perhaps have a photo or story of happy times you'd like to share? Sometimes it helps, but understandably, not for everyone, so I leave that up to you. Just a thought.
