Larger than you would think!

Check out the Amazon Forum and a Thread very near the top that is titled something like: I Love Amazons - ... Within the huge Thread you will find a list of segments included in that Thread. Check-out the one that is tilted something like 'getting to the foot of the problem.' That segment will cover your question and even includes several photos provided by another member that shows a Mac on a perch that defines why they need larger perches. FYI: Natural Branches of various sizes is also important.

The vast majority of that Thread can be used for a better understanding of the needs of Parrots in general.

Welcome to the Parrot Forums!

Cheers!

Welcome, Harold! And with that hello, Imgoing to hijack this thread a sec....

Awesome read, Sailboat! I didn't know it was there! I skipped to the perch part (page 4, Harold)...and I have one quick question. We do have a thick perch for my B&G macaw....but she prefers the boing (I do check it daily for wear and tear). She sits in the thicker natural wood perch, but more often than not, she is on the boing. Should I encourage her to sit on the wood perch and move it to where the boing is, or she should be fine?

Again, sorry to hijack your thread, Harold....at least I stayed on topic :)

Having various sizes for the bird to perch on is very important to prevent foot problems in the future. Particularly natural wood perches that have thinner and thicker sections throughout the length of the perch. That being said though, I have sizes from 1.5” up to 3” for Loki to stand on. He also has rope perches (large, thick rope) and boings.

Boing are excellent as they maximize variation across the pads on the claws. As the Mac shifts slightly the pads adjust altering contact pressure. You're staying on top with daily inspection covers they're only down fall, fraying. As your Mac ages, the natural wood perch(s) will likely increase in use as stability of the solid wood will become more of interest for sleeping and napping.

Happy you enjoyed the read as there is a ton of information in that Thread.
FYI: The Diet segment is specific to Amazons, but with Mac's one only needs to increase the protein percentage.
